Illegal Immigrants/May Day
I have sat back and really just been reading about all this illegal immigrants comments and just posting sometimes. But I think it is time to make some comments about the back lash and the anger some of us American Latinos are starting to feel, but first I will tell you'll a little about my -self. My ancestors helped financed Columbus trip. No one ever thought that he would have discovered this hole new part of the world. Also I really don't care if he was the first, second or third here. My Spanish ancestors settle in what is now known as The United States, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and at one time before Mexico took over it The Republic of Yucatan. And this is just from my mothers, mothers "The White Latino" side. My Great Great-grandfather and his father were slave owners back in Cuba until Spain abolished it back in 1886. Also my Great Great-grandfather married the girl he was in love with. She was a beautiful slave girl. They moved to The Republic Of Yucatan. Their son married a Mayan women. Now on my mothers father side, this part of the family is just as mixed, some of them came from North Africa and the Canary Islands.

Now on my fathers side all I can say is that they are just your avg. Spanish/Germans/Texans. We are a very mix family and are very proud of who we are. My mom came to the U.S. back in 1948 from Yucatan to study here and live with her auntie in Texas. During this time it was illegal to speak in spanish in Texas. I really get piss when I realize that this is the reason why some many American Latinos in Texas don't know how to speak Spanish. I thank God that my mother would not let them break her from who she was/is. She likes telling her grandkids about how important it is to know about your history and to never fold under pressure from others. She likes telling the story on how she had to correct the teacher/nun at her high school about Texas History. like the reason why Mexico and the American settlers fought (Because Mexico had abolished slavery) or when she was at a swimming pool and they let her in because she was white and they would not let her cousins in because they were brown. So she got into a shouting match with the parks guy telling him that she was part black, which he didn't believe until her grandmother came to pick her up and he saw a African/Spanish women picking up a White girl. Now my dad told us that when he was a teen the cops stopped him because he was with a bunch of wetbacks. You see my dad is 6 ft. and looks very very white, blondie hair and Green eyes. He got into a shouting match with the cop and they took him in. When my Grandfather went to pick him up from the police station, the cops didn't know what to say to my grandfather because he was will known. He worked for the U.S. Government and even worked for JFK.

Now I will write about what it has felt like being brown skin in my America. When I was a kid age 7 that same African/Spanish Grandmother had taken my brother and I to the ice house/mine-mart. She was not allowed to enter because of her skin color (Black!) My brother was the only one that got to go in. You see he is white and I'm not. She had people ask her how much she charged to take care of us kids. They thought she was a Nanny. But one thing this Great women thought us kids was to be very proud of who we were. She taught us to learn about the African American life and to understand that we were all equal.

I have had African Americans, White Americans and even American Latinos call me names. You see I can pass for a lite skin black or latina. I have had to deal with that kind of bull shit all my life. But has this made me feel less proud of who I'm? HELL NO! I'm A American Latino. I have had people give strange looks when my 5 yrs calls me mom. Why??? Because the Spanish/German really shows in him. He has blond hair, fare skin and Blue-grey eyes.

Now how do I feel about the illegals in my Country. I think they should be able to stay if:

1. If they have had kids born here.

2. If there is no kids and they have lived here in our Nation more then 2

years without having a crime record I think they should be able to stay.

3. They do need to learn English, but so do the rest of us.

4. They are my brother and sister and I will fight for their rights to a better live. It is not their fault that our Nations have acted like slave owners!

So I will be on the front line on May Day. I'm will to fight for all our rights, because we are all just humans. What our Governments have done on both sides of the board shouldn't be the reason to punish these illegal immigrants. We should be a shame of what we all have done to help the Businesses World Rape and in slave people for lower wages. Its time to stand up not only for these illegal immigrants, but for all our rights.

I'M A AMERICAN AND I WOULD RATHER DIE ON MY FEET THEN BE BEGGING ON MY KNEES!

4. Multinational companies have enslaved people
kept the money for themselves and let the common people survive by a thread. American and European have influenced the economies of Latin America for generations.

Great post. I agree that this is about working peoples' rights, not illegal immigrants.

8. so many (even on this board) are placing blame
in the wrong place. They are blaming those who come here to make a better life for themselves, rather than the corporations and individuals who hire them for crap wages instead of a legal person who would, by law, have to be paid more. That is what we need to focus on instead of all the infighting over who gets to stay or who has to leave.

If we don't stand up for the little guy, then there is no use for standing up for our own rights.

People have rights. If you are a visitor here, a legal immigrant, a naturalized citizen, or even an illegal immigrant, you have basic human rights no matter what.

Illegal immigration is a thorny issue for sure but I don't see it as huge problem. I am more worried about the illegal occupier of the White House and his illegal activities than I am about who is mowing the lawn down the street.

Problem is, when times are tough, we tend to blame the least among us. "We can't free the slaves because they will take our jobs." Rosie the Riveter was good enough to do the work during wartime but as soon as all those guys came home, they had to go back to the kitchen. I am not sure all that is particularly relevant here. What we need are good labor and wage standards that apply to all industries and enforcement of the immigration laws already on the books. And some consistency in the immigration laws would be nice too. How come Cubans can stay here if they manage to land but Haitians (for example) cannot? And of course, better border enforcement (which was watered down at the behest of Bush himself, I think).

Yes you are right about this. Just look at the mess he has made of our Nation.

"How come Cubans can stay here if they manage to land but Haitians (for example) cannot?"

Because most Haitians are BLACK.

6. I thought Slaver had end with families
like mine. But We The People need to learn and stand together to end all slavery. I'm ashamed that we didn't learn from 2 yrs. ago. when the Republicans used The Gay and Lesbians as a wedge issue. Now they are using Brown People. How sick and low can we Americans get.

7. Is there a cental location to go to
For information on local rallies? Will they be happening on Monday or will that just be a walk out? We're keeping our kid home from school and not working that day but I would love to know if there is anything specific going on, in, say, Austin, rally wise.

Looks like they still have pretty strict requirements.

I wouldn't mind moving to Canada, but I don't have enough money and I'm not married to a Canadian.

What I find funny/weird is that we are ALL AMERICANS on this side of the World. There is North America, Central America and South American. There is no such thing as North America of England or what ever. We need to start looking on how we can fix our relationships with the rest of The American Countries.

22. Thank you for this. You have been blessed with a rich
heritage that affords you an unusually perceptive insight. If we are to resist the destructiveness of greed we must be alert to the methods of those who wish to exploit us. The sad truth is, America represents both the best and worst impulses of humanity. As science fiction writers often muse, even in this age of "globalization" it may take an invasion of aliens from outer space to finally force us to recognize we are citizens of the same fragile planet. Of all human emotions it seems to strongest will always be fear.

From my family knowing Presidents to Governors of States. From being worth Millions to being dirt poor and now just being upper middle class which is o.k. with me. I'm who I'm and I'm very proud of my Heritage. My family has done the best they could have done for every generation. Like I said before I will fight for you all and I fight for the little guy. Why because I'm An American. So on May Day tomorrow I will be out there with my fellow Americans and fight the fight for those so call:

25. For you, TriMetFan, from Iraqi workers....
(Note: I met Falah Alwan last June in St. Paul as part of a Iraqi Labor Leader Tour to more than 20 cities organized by US Labor Against the War. There's a great video of the tour. Here's the trailer: http://meetingfacetoface.org/# I'm in it as a rep of one of the hosting organizations. Solidarity!)

Falah Alwan

First of May...The International Workers’ Day

The workers of the world along with the freedom-loving powers are celebrating the first of May, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia, all across our planet. It is the day of solidarity to commemorate the Chicago workers who gave their lives confronting the capitalism a century ago. Today millions of people stand together for freedom and equality, and fight the injustice of capitalism and their allies; the enemy of man kind.

Despite the differences in race, color, language, ethnicity, and culture the workers gathered behind the same goals and interests. From the occupied Iraq to the Unite States and United Kingdom who their tanks occupy Iraq and assaulting viciously the innocent civilians, the workers however raise the same banner of demands.

Three years of US led occupation and the false claims of establishing democracy, nevertheless they spread horror, fears, and destruction, imposed armed militia to suppress the society and force their reactionary rules in many regions in the country. The government in power divided the society into sects and groups based on language and religion and distributed power based on quota system pushing the society into a sectarian conflict resulted in slaying thousands of civilians and displacing thousands of families.

Tackling the imposed dark scenario, a radical labor movement seeks to push for its liberating alternative. It raised a slogan stating “Ending the Occupation is the workers’ Responsibility” realizing that the workers are in the forefront of fighting and ending the occupation.

Remarkably enough that amidst the sectarian beheadings and bloody fight, no single ethnic or religious based argument or row was recorded or witnessed among the workers. In fact the workers raised radical slogans demanding the improvement of their life conditions, extending their freedom, and revoking the still imposed former regime labor law. This phenomenon demonstrates a significant moral presented by the workers who did not get carried along with the sectarian violence and realized that their interests and goals require their unity and integration. Furthermore the workers realized that being carried away with the policies that attempt to crumble them will keep the current situations intact rather. As a result, the workers along with the other inhabitants of many neighborhoods that witnessed sectarian violence, decided to arm themselves and protect their families and neighborhoods regardless of whether they are Sunnis or Shiites.

The workers actually send clear message stating that despite their tragic conditions, they are able to decide their own fate and capable of salvaging the society from these current situations.

The unification of the workers and their goals and interests is the only way to end the present situations and establish a society of freedom and equality.

Long Live May First

Long Live Freedom and Equality
