Thousands march in mass anti-war rally in New York

NEW YORK (AFP) - Thousands of anti-war demonstrators marched in New York, demanding the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq and vowing a summer of protests ahead of mid-term elections in November.

The protesters included national figures like civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and the prominent anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. The mass rally was organised by a broad coalition of groups representing veterans, trade unions, military families, environmentalists and civil rights activists.

"This is what democracy looks like," said chief organiser Leslie Cagan, national coordinator of the anti-war lobby United for Peace and Justice. "We are here to send a message to the White House and the Congress that we must end this war now, bring our troops home and also end the attack on our civil rights at home," Cagan said.

While the main focus of the march was Iraq, Cagan said the rally was also aimed at protesting any plans for military intervention in Iran and at setting the domestic political agenda ahead of the congressional elections later in the year. "Today we march, tomorrow we organise and in November we vote," Cagan told cheering supporters.

1. I want to know, when the electronic voting machines rig the vote
in November, do we all descend on DC in protest? Or our state capitals? Because I know it's gonna happen unless ALL states outlaw the vote rigging machines.

3. It has no traction with the moms and pops.

I can't explain why. I'd think that people would be in the streets breaking and burning stuff like the Watts Riot 2006. Our rights are being violated.

The subject comes up on DU. Even HERE, when talk show host Guy James devotes an episode of his SHOW to the subject and HE promotes it and I post a separate thread promoting it, DU is nowhere to be found. It's too hard to give up another day of Randi because she's playing that Bounce Your Boobies song for the millionth fucking time and God knows, people don't want to miss it. Guy fought hard for the return of his show and DU should be fucking ASHAMED at the UNIVERSAL lack of support they've shown him. I call his show but where the hell is the rest of DU?

I don't know what it's going to take. Maybe if Rove gets taken out of the picture by Fitzgerald, Bush will be so out of control that mom and pop will have no choice but to wake up.

2. In December we wonder how we could've lost the popular vote yet again
when all the polls indicated otherwise.

In January, no one gives a damn and has moved on to worrying about the latest missing white girl.

4. But on one does worry about the latest missing white girl.
Big Brother's propaganda doesn't always translate to the average American's concerns and interests. Jes cuz it's on TV news don't make news.
