SPREADING THE WORD: Activists Mike Gonzalez, left, and Manuel Fonseca hang posters on a Santa Ana store’s windows promoting the boycott.

SANTA ANA - Arturo Castañeda, assistant manager for a BBVA Bancomer branch bank on Fourth Street, will open for business Monday morning in case one of his customers needs to withdraw cash.

But with a nationwide boycott of work, school and consumption called for by some organizations pressing for immigration policy changes, Castañeda knows he could end up alone inside the branch.

"If I don't have any tellers, I'm not going to open," he said. "I'll just close up and go home."

Cities across the United States - including Santa Ana, Los Angeles and San Diego - are bracing for a national day of protest Monday organized by immigrant-rights and Latino groups clamoring for an overhaul from Washington.
