1. Some people, I know, are staying off the Internet in addition to
boycotting work, school, and shopping.

21. From what I've heard, they're taking "a day without immigrants" literally.
They're pretty much disappearing for the day.

4. They hit us where it hurts
It was mostly ignored here until this morning when people were coming into work. The suddenly realized they weren't able to buy coffee anywhere! That got their attention! Several of my coworkers then went home sick! Ha!

6. San Diego's protests are later today
The San Ysidro march to the border won't happen until 1pm PST. The two candelight vigils won't take place until 5:30pm. That's why my sleepy little Navy town hasn't woken up yet. :-)

I thought it would be issue number one in the GD. Maybe people are at the demos? Or they are just worn out on the issue? I don't know.

30. Two different types of flame war
1) The standard arguments over immigration itself

2) A few Duers being very upset of the coverage these protests are receieving vs. what the anti war protests did and lashing out at these protests and supposedly who is behind them.

15. I don't think it'll make any medium-term or long-term impact at all.
Short-term, it'll get some press. I don't think it'll get further than that.

25. Exactly. "Reform" won't get out of Congress this year.
What's happening in the streets is freakin' blackmail. Most people I know, including every black person and every LEGAL immigrant I know, are firmly against ILLEGAL immigration.

It's not racist to be against illegal immigration.

18. I'm watching the MSNBC/Univision coverage
What's to say? The crowds are large, they are peaceful, and they are going from city to city doing interviews, asking the standard questions...why are you out here today, what do you want to accomplish, yada yada yada.

There'd probably be more commentary if they showed speeches or that kind of thing. Right now, it's interviews, live shots. They're interviewing the woman from 'A Day without a Mexican' right now (great film, by the way).

26. I'm surprised too
Considering that there were a lot of discussions this past week...

Anyway, Market Street (San Francisco) is jammed pack with people right now. It's been like this for going on 2 hours now with no easing of the crowd - at least it doesn't feel like that on the street level.

As things go, it's pretty peaceful here (at the corners of Montgomery + Market and Samsone + Market). I mean peaceful as in organized. No sign of any splinter groups going off their own way. The sound of the crowds is pretty deafening but you can hear it occilate with one group or another or just because. Once in a while, it'll cresendo something fierce.

It's odd that one or two blocks up from Market, things seem to be "normal" other than the sound of course. I haven't been able to get to south of Market tho since the crowd is pretty dense.

Lots of befuddled tourists.

Some of impatient drivers - but hey, it's not like it hasn't been on the news all week over here.

Edited on Mon May-01-06 03:48 PM by maxsolomon
unless i eat lunch at the burrito stand. i mean that literally, not in a derogatory way. i like the Oaxacans that work there.

its big, i guess. but this is not my war, and i am too cynical to think that it will change shit.

full of sound & fury, signifying nothing. its a distraction, and the immigrant community are rising to the bait just like the gay community last election cycle. the lasting effect will be continued GOP control of both houses.

32. I am torn
My fear is that this is an issue of cheap labor for the corporations. Jobs are heading to India because the work force is cheaper. And now, labor is entering the country paid below the minimum wage. The middle class is being squeezed.
