Edwards Retains Lead in South Carolina Primary
North Carolina Senator John Edwards has increased his lead in the latest polls over Massachusetts Senator John Kerry in the South Carolina Democratic primary. Voting is now underway in South Carolina, the first state in the U.S. south to hold a primary election this year.

3. How'd you measure provinciality?
Edited on Tue Feb-03-04 05:11 PM by carolinayellowdog
My best guess would be percentage of native-born (meaning in the state.) NC was highest a century or more ago, but sure isn't now. I don't think SC is near the top either. Probably somewhere like Nebraska is most provincial in terms of insularity.

Will report back with a statistic.

on edit: can't find stats for in-state/out-of-state births, but can find foreign-born percentages. SC is 2.9, low compared to NC's 5.3 but high compared to ND at 1.9 and SD at 1.8.

4. Don't bet on it.
Don't write off the South. Even if he doesn't win in South Carolina, Edwards will make Bush spend a large chunk of his money to try to keep the South. Edwards has a shot at South Carolian, North Carolina, Georgie, West Virginia, Florida, Tennesee, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Clark has a shot at a couple of those, but none of the others do.

5. No more so than New Hampshire
Let's look at who has won the New Hampshire primary:

1988: Dukakis (Massachusetts)
1992: Tsongas (Massachusetts)
2004: Kerry (Massachusetts)

Notice a pattern?
