Video Hunt Contest: Find Bush singing National Anthem in Spanish in 2000
Edited on Tue May-02-06 12:18 PM by zulchzulu
Apparently, Bush sang the National Anthem in Spanish in 2000 while campaigning fro President. CSPAN might have it...somebody has a version somewhere. Texas, New Mexico, Florida?

This would be pretty damn funny to find!

There is a C-SPAN link that is dead that might have it...

1. Where did you get this claim from?
If we knew, it might help in tracking it down.

Even if we can't find a video, an article in a reputable newspaper or magazine would be almost as good.

4. Franken mentioned it a few minutes ago...
Not that he's a totally credible source, but it seemed like he had heard fairly concrete knowledge of Bush singing in Spanish while campaigning. It makes sense since he would butcher his Spanish for votes.

7. Kevin Phillips' book American Dynasty on page 142

"George W. Bush . . . would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ in Spanish…”

From the comments here:

"I am reading Kevin Phillips’ book American Dynasty and on page 142 (bottom of page) he writes: “George W. Bush . . . would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ in Spanish…”
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could dig up some video of that!" - Comment by Todd — May 2, 2006 @ 10:06 am

9. ASK Jon Secada.
Did C-Span ever do a 2004 compilation CD or something. You could also ask Univision.

10. This page has a number of Spanish language campaign ads from 2004.

No singing, but the "speak English!" crowd might not be happy about them.

11. From "American Dynasty" by Kevin Phillips.
Edited on Tue May-02-06 11:36 PM by drm604
I found this by searching the book on Amazon.
When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties sometimes joining in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BNPGAU/sr=8-1/qid=1146627666/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-9000333-3292762?%5Fencoding=UTF8

If this is correct we know some cities. I'm near Philadelphia, any suggestions where I should look? There might be mentions in local Hispanic papers or maybe even in mainstream ones. Are there Philly organizations that organize Hispanic festivals? Is anyone reading this a Spanish speaking Philadelphian who could work with me on this?

I wonder if it would be possible to contact Kevin Phillips and ask him about his sources. That's probably the quickest route.

On edit: Come on people, recommend this thread. We may actually be able to track this down.

16. I bougt that book from Amazon as a .PDF file,
and was able to find that sentence by Search. The page information was: "540 (159 of 415)". I assume that 540 refers to the page number of the e-version. Thanks for the lead. I'll put it to good use.

17. You're welcome.
Are you aware that you can search the book on Amazon without purchasing it?
One thing that doesn't seem to be available in the online search is the "notes" section in the back of the book. Since you've purchased a PDF, I'd suggest that you look through the notes for that chapter to see if he cites any sources for the Spanish singing episode(s). If he does can you either post them here or PM me?

18. I was (vaguely) aware of that,
but hadn't utilized that feature so far. But thanks for the heads-up. I have an Amazon tab on my Firefox browser, and use it quite frequently. Whenever a book gets my attention, regardless of where I may eventually buy it, I check out the reviews at Amazon. From here onwards, I'll "riffle" through them on-line.

As for your question, there was no reference to the notes in that paragraph. But I may have enough info to make an effective Google search. (Later--- I've been up all night and will soon brew some coffee and get off to bed).

21. If I'm understanding you correctly,
you looked in that paragraph in the main text to see if it contained any kind of reference to the notes section. In my experience many books have a notes section without any reference being made to it in the main text. Look directly at the notes section. If it's like many, it's broken down by chapter. Go to the segment in the notes section for the chapter that contains that paragraph. Look through it and see if there is anything about the spanish singing, hispanic festivals, or anything that may give us a lead.

24. I'm afraid not (I think!).
That relevant excerpt comes from Part II, Chapter 4. The Chapter header is: "Texanomics And Compassionate Conservatism", while the subdivision is labelled: "George W.Bush and the Economica of Evangelic Protestantism". All the notes from that chapter are numbered (1 to 90). I've seen a few books where the chapter notes are identified by page numbers, and then by the first phrase. This one isn't.

I also have Kevin Phillips' "American Theocracy" via Audible.com, and was listening to it while going through my morning coffee ritual. I finally finished off Part 2, and was so freaked out that I won't get to sleep for a while to come. I've been reading American history all my life, and am well acquainted with much of the names and events he describes. But I NEVER quite made the connection --- until now (Brrrrrr!).

I've been a Premium Subscriber at Audible.com for over 3 years, and have amassed a pretty large collection of spoken word books. With some, listening is as good or even better than reading. But most are not, and this one falls into that category.

12. Not video, but...
From George W. Bush's inauguration in 2001:

Also on dreary display Thursday were soul diva Kim Weston, decked out head-to-toe in fur, à la blaxploitation heroine Cleopatra Jones, singing America's black national anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing"; mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves performing "American Anthem"; and Sandi Patti, the Christian recording world's answer to Barbra Streisand, belting out a spirited version of the national anthem.

Wayne Newton offered President-elect George W. Bush a made-for-Branson cover of Neil Diamond's "They're Coming to America." Jon Secada sang a salsa-fied, Spanglish-ized rendition of "America the Beautiful."

Might be funny to watch his incompetent attempt.

I am not convinced that publicizing would be useful.

This was a standard meaningless FAUX news type story. publicizing the chimp singing it in Spanish smells like a setup to me.

14. Conspiracy / set up?
Edited on Wed May-03-06 01:37 AM by Bushknew
I am so sick of Democrats who think everything is a trap or set up to make
them look foolish or that this issue is a distraction from a more important one.

Republicans are hypocrites to the core and that should be shown
in every democratic campaign video and in as many ways possible.

F#$k yes this video would be useful!

15. stupid pandering chimp or anti-immigrant jerk
might be possible to have your cake and eat it too. I would stay on message with anti-immigrant jerk.

Stupid pandering chimp has some redeeming qualities.

They stepped in a huge pile of elephant turd and I'm guessing they would like to find a way out. I don't think that you need a conspiracy theory for that.

They had to know about the Spanish version when they created the story.

20. The Masses vs the Policy Wonks
Edited on Wed May-03-06 11:43 AM by Bushknew
The masses are Desperate Housewives or WWF people, not policy wonks.

I’m not saying lets stop asking about Iraq, classified info leaks, warrantless wiretaps and fuel prices.

But, I think a video montage showing in essence that Republicans can’t be trusted
would connect more with the masses than a nuanced policy wonk ad.

Lets do both and stop with "this issue is a distraction from a more important one."

Peace

22. Drudge is reporting Chimpy sang Spanish anthem in 2000
From site:

Bush sang Star Spangled Banner en español during 2000 campaign
Wed May 03 2006 09:35:20 ET

"When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, George W. Bush would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush” mariachi band flown in from Texas."

So writes author Kevin Phillips in his book AMERICAN DYNASTY.

Last week, at the height of the illegal immigrant's boycott build up, Bush told reporters: "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English."
