Kerry takes strong lead among Michigan voters
Massachusetts senator gets 56 percent support; Dean trails with 13%

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has opened a huge lead in Michigan in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to a statewide Detroit News/Mitchell tracking poll.
Kerry, who gained momentum across the nation after big wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, drew 56 percent support among 300 Michigan residents who say they will likely vote in Saturday’s Democratic presidential caucus.
The News/Mitchell poll showed former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who is banking on keeping his campaign alive with a strong showing in Michigan, running a distant second with 13 percent support.
