Steny Hoyer (D-Md.): "Bush is president, he deserves some respect"
Hoyer: Bush deserves respect
By Andrew Barr and Josephine Hearn

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took on a rare role yesterday as a defender of President Bush.

Hoyer came to the defense of the commander in chief after Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where the president took a drubbing from comedian Stephen Colbert.

“I thought some of it was funny, but I think it got a little rough,” Hoyer said. “He is the president of the United States, and he deserves some respect.”

“I’m certainly not a defender of the administration,” Hoyer reassured stunned observers, but Colbert “crossed the line” with many jokes that were “in bad taste.” Colbert needled Bush, often prompting only an expressionless stare from the president, who appeared not to be amused.

1. Why?
Because some roughly 50% of the American populace (with the help of a little Repug chicanery) put the guy in office despite the fact that he's completely unsuited for the task?

Don't think so.

7. Actually, that's 50% of the voting population
Not the whole American populace. Given the fact that only 40% of the American people voted (121,068,715 of 295,734,134), this assclown was elected by app 20.5% of the American people. (This is, of course, completely ignoring the crap the Repugs were up to 2004)

2. The respect is for the office, not the person. Bush, as the
destroyer of the Constitution, the American way of life and demonizer of the masses, deserves no respect.

44. That's the key word, "earned"...
We all know that Bush doesn't care about how history will portray him, because he's told us so...

:spray:

...but when you look back over his life, from the prep school days and the AWOL National Guard and one failed oil company after another, it's never been about him "earning" anything...it's been about it getting handed to him on a silver platter, followed by him screwing it up in one way or another.

:patriot:

24. Time to end Hoyer's dream of being Speaker.
as if gerrymandering will allow that anyway. Hoyer is the one who does not deserve our respect. Bush II is worse than Nixon, Nixon deserve our respect. Our respect, Abrahamof, lies in Iraq, talks to god. A padded cell after all his war crimes are investigated.

...sorry, Bush deserves NO respect, NONE whatsoever. He has besmirched the office of the president with his presence, and his Administration consists of persons for whom being corrupt, criminal liars seems to have been a prerequisite to inclusion. Hoyer can fuck the hell off.

Why anyone thinks that there is anything of value to be gained from supporting the Beltway Dems amazes me. I am not surprised at all that a Beltway Dem would come out against Colbert's expert skewering of the pResident. I just figured it'd be Lieberman or someone like that.

What a farce.

20. Well, isn't THAT refreshing?! (Sarcasm)
I don't seem to remember republican -- or democrat -- calling Don Imus a few years back during the White House Correspondence Dinner when he went after Bill Clinton, especially with the astroturf in the pick-up comment. This event is not exactly a Friar's Club Roast, but the president expects to get a zigger or two if he shows up. Enter at your own risk, etc.

And what about begging the question: Colbert's comments were on the mark and either valid or invalid. You can't effectively change the topic by stating the comments were inappropriate because they were directed at the Commander-in-chief during a war (invalid war, at that).

26. Bullshit, Hoyer. BULLSHIT!
To George Bush, the Constitution is just a G*ddamned piece of paper. I'm supposed to have respect for a person who feels this way? BULLSHIT!

The office of the President deserves respect, not the person in office. Respect must be earned. Bush has done NOTHING to earn respect.

You need to crawl out from under your rock, Steny, and take a look at what's been going on in America. Our rights and civil liberties are being compromised at best, trampled at worst. We have the most corrupt Congress in history. A President who appoints his cronies to jobs they can't do, and the result is dead people floating in the streets of American cities, being eaten by rats.

Check out the latest deficit total.

Check out the latest total for the war in Iraq. (Which our President lied to us about.)

Check out the latest gas pump prices. (Remember our Energy Policy was written by oil company CEOs.)

Now take a look in the mirror, Steny. You've allowed them to get away with all of this. You're no better than they are.

It's time for you to go find something else to do, Steny, you've lost touch with America and its values.

30. Yeah that's right!
Stephen Colbert did cross the line.
He crossed a line that needed to be crossed! He crossed a line that repugnican politicians, pundits, and talk show hosts have been lying, slandering, and swiftboating over for years. Colbert courageously crossed a line that most Dem leaders and "journalsts" haven't had the guts to cross. And as far as "respect" for the likes of Bush, stick it up your ass, Steny!

36. Some remarks by Kos
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/5/2/23293/39735

When can we get rid of that joker Steny Hoyer?

...

I'd like to know which jokes, in particular, Hoyer thought were in bad taste.

Colbert, like many of us, is crashing the gate in DC. The natives, not used to getting more than Jay Leno-style good-natured ribbing, don't like it when one of their own gets a serious dose of reality. And Steney Hoyer, more than almost any Democrat in the House, has been there a tad too long.

Well, more than a tad.

We need a Joe Lieberman of 2008, an entrenched do-nothing Dem desperately in need of a good primary challenger. Good to see Hoyer auditioning for the part.
