Russians say Cheney's speech "can lead any place, even to a new Cold War."

Cold War is reheated as Cheney tells off Moscow
From Jeremy Page in Moscow

DICK CHENEY, the US Vice-President, accused Russia yesterday of eroding a decade of democratic reform and blackmailing Europe with its energy reserves, in America’s sharpest rebuke to President Putin.
Speaking at a summit of eight former Eastern bloc countries that have turned against Moscow, Mr Cheney said that the Kremlin should embrace democracy or risk harming relations with more countries.

<<snip>>

The speech caused outrage in Russia, with some senior figures accusing Mr Cheney of trying to undermine Mr Putin before the G8 summit in St Petersburg in July. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s deputy spokesman, said that the speech was incomprehensible and “full of a subjective evaluation of us and of the processes that are going on in Russia”.

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former leader of the Soviet Union, said: “Cheney’s speech looks like a provocation and interference in Russia’s internal affairs in terms of its content, form and place.”

<<snip>>

Mr Cheney’s remarks will infuriate the Kremlin just when the US needs Russia’s support against Iran.

Vyacheslav Nikonov, of the Politika Fund think-tank, told The Times that Mr Cheney’s speech could lead Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, to reject Chevron and Conoco-Phillips, the US oil companies, when it chooses partners to develop the huge Shtokman gasfield. “There’ll be a tough reaction,” he said. “If you enter the path of escalation, it can lead any place, even to a new Cold War.”

I miles ahead of Cheny, in intelligence. He knows how to play the real game. Cheneys' brain has suffered from lack of oxygen.I would never underestimate Putin. Besides anyone who loves The Beatles as Putin does , can't be all bad.

10. It's amazing, isn't it?
People used to accuse Bush of being a "swaggering cowboy" back in 2001. Little did they know it would get worse.

Much worse. We now have on our hands a bona-fide lunatic in Washington. I've actually read that Cheney has a form of autism....he's congenitally unable to empathize with others in any way, shape or form.

21. "Anyone who loves the Beatles can't be all that bad" How about
anyone that murders a 1/3 of the male population of Chechnya can't be all that bad. Putin is a mass murdering Tyrant. Ask Russian journalists what they think of him. Well the ones that haven't been assassinated anyway
.

11. Glad I own Gazprom stock!
Russia is giving the 1 fingered salute to US corporations...and my Gazprom stock has been going up up up! It just recently split!

But more to the point, the Bushbots are making some formidable enemies. Lil' George doesnt hold a candle to the KGB trained, black-belt in the Kremlin. This should be good.

....with oil heading upwards of $100 a barrel, Putin can afford to build a first-class new Cold War....the world wants oil/gas and the Russians have it....we're the chumps....we're the worlds' number one glutton for oil/gas and we have precious little of it....we go around the world beating up people to get it....

17. "...a provocation and interference in Russia's internal affairs..."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060504/ap_on_re_eu/cheney

"Cheney's speech looks like a provocation and interference in Russia's internal affairs in terms of its content, form and place," former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin expressed annoyance that Russia had not been invited to the conference of former Soviet republics and allies.

A Russian lawmaker, ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, dismissed Cheney's comments as "absolutely false accusations." He said Cheney had expressed the opinion "of only part of the U.S. political elite" but not that of Bush.
