Liz Smith's column: "Texas is in play...."
DO MESS with Texas! The presidential election is 21/2 years away, but the race is already on in Austin. Texas Monthly reports wannabes from both parties leave no doubt that they have their eye on the current president's home state.

Rudolph Giuliani and Sen. John McCain came through last fall. Sen. Hillary Clinton collected lots of dough for her Senate re-election in March. Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and Sen. Joe Biden have been in town on the same day. Retired general Wesley Clark, Iowa's Gov. Tom Vilsack, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and former veep candidate John Edwards have also campaigned for the Lone Star State. Writes editor Evan Smith: "Texas is finally in play after six of seven presidential elections in which a Bush has been in one of the two slots on the ticket." Local politician Kent Hance says, "It's a new game for us. Up for grabs are 34 electoral votes, nearly 13 percent of the total needed to get elected."

1. when the democrats finally start to win back what they lost between
civil rights and the southern strategy they will be in control for a long time. not to mention the boost they will get from the damage these insane neocons and evangelical whackos have done to the republican psyche.

2. About friggin' time they decided Texas was winnable.
I've been saying this for years. Many people I know who voted for * in the last election said they did that because they didn't know anything about Kerry but that he was a Vietnam protester.

No appearance, no commercials, no ads, no billboards, just house signs and bumper stickers (which were hard to come by) with his name on it.

And BS news from the MSM about his "lies" about his service in Vietnam, wind surfing and snowboarding.

That's one reason I liked Howard Dean - he came to our state several times.

3. Yes, Texas is certainly in play
almost all of the candidates except Clark and Feingold (who wasn't even mentioned here) came to use the Texas ATM, not to help candidates running for office in 06.

Clark has made several trips to Texas in support of candidates for 06 and will be the opening speaker at the Texas Democratic Party State convention in June.
