Tramping through the 50th District campaign
Your article, “GOP ad disappoints Bilbray, but he won't insist it be pulled” (News, April 25), provides considerable insights into the character of the two candidates. Having been a conservative for 50 years, I am at the end of my rope. The fact that 50th Congressional District candidate Brian Bilbray expresses only “mild disappointment” with the ad sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee is likely due to the fact that his own recent political campaign included some of the same kinds of distortions, half-truths and sensationalism aimed at his strongest opponent.
While my conservative ideology remains intact, I can no longer support candidates who use and/or tolerate deliberately misleading campaign messages and tactics. Rather, my vote will go to the candidate who understands the need for reform, displays integrity and runs a clean campaign. In discussions with colleagues, I have discovered I'm not alone in my thinking. When we vote again in November, we will have had an opportunity to evaluate the short-term performance of our elected representative and at that point determine if a change of direction is required.
PAUL ROSE Carmel Valley
Bilbray obviously doesn't get it. The voters, especially in the 50th District, have absolutely had it with politics as usual. We've had it with earmarks and comfy relationships between legislators and lobbyists and the perks our elected officials enjoy that we have to fight for like health insurance and pensions that don't go poof. Residents of the district have been dragged through the muck by our former congressional representative, and we're in no mood to watch attack ads that play fast and loose with the facts.
If he is disappointed with the current Republican ad attacking Democratic candidate Francine Busby, as he says he is, he should ask that the ad not be run again. Then he and Busby should make a commitment to keep our district out of the slime pit during this important campaign. I'm certain she will agree to do so and abide by such a commitment.

The current ads by the Republican Party against Busby reek of the mud-slinging campaign Richard Nixon and the Republican Party used against Helen Gahagan Douglas.

I am really tired of the monotone voice of the National Republican Congressional Committee spouting off gossip and innuendoes about Busby. Does the leadership of the Republican Party in Washington, D.C., have such a low opinion of the voters out here in California that it's afraid to give us an idea on how its candidate relates to what is going on in the world today rather than trashing the opposition? No wonder the voters are losing faith in the political process.
Congratulations to Lionel Van Deerlin for speaking out against such a bitter, negative campaign in his column (“Turning nasty in nice San Diego,” Opinion, April 27).

District 50 is where Duke came from. A very Republican district.
This is interesting to watch them eat themselves.
