Polls show Republicans in peril

Is it 1994 again?

That's the question people keep asking those of us who keep an eye on the polls. You remember 1994: Newt Gingrich, the Contract with America, the Republican Revolution. That was the last time angry voters rose up and overthrew the majority party in Congress. Then, it was the Democrats who lost. Now, it's the Republicans in peril.

The answer is that it sure looks a lot like 1994 in the polls. The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows Congress with a 25 percent job-approval rating. That's the lowest rating for Congress since -- gulp -- 1994.

Even though President Bush is not on the ballot this fall, midterm elections typically are strongly influenced by a president's popularity -- or unpopularity, in the case of President Clinton in 1994. Clinton's job rating at this time in 1994? Forty-eight percent. President Bush's latest job rating? Thirty-three percent. Double gulp.

Can Congress do something about gas prices? Why, yes. The Senate Republican leadership proposed a $100 rebate for all Americans. That proposal got laughed off the agenda. It has become this year's symbol of an out-of-touch Congress, just as the Terri Schiavo case was last year.

1. boo fucking hoo
those rich corrupt bastard ahve had a free ride for 14 years , exploited a nation's fears after 9/11, and now they want us to cry them a river

the nations' $3 gas is the republican party's energy policy, Bush's 33% approval rating is the result of incompetant, immorral, corrupt, and unethical behavior. Bush outed Valerie Plame and Bush behavior has outed himself for the petulant, greedy, worthless sop America has ever known

2. Well, there he is again, Mr. American Enterprise Institute himself.
bill schneider is a senior fellow at the AEI - a conservative think-tank/snake-pit and the cradle of the accursed PNAC. Somehow, though, you just never hear about that when he's introduced on-camera.

He is fascinating to watch because his face gives him away every time. You can read much deeper, richer meaning into his reports by watching his face. Does it betray a slight, sly, impish twinkling? Or is it a dark, dour, and somber as an undertaker's? When he was talking about libby in the last big go-round a couple of weeks ago, he looked like death not even warmed over. And he didn't brighten up by the time he got to his lockout, either. He remained utterly funereal. Didn't even look like himself. Few people on television at the moment are so transparent - and I'm talking STRICTLY on-air delivery style, cosmetics, superficiality. I've not seen many on camera who telegraph their true feelings so routinely as he does - except for monumental calamities where nobody could help it, such as September 11th and Hurricane Katrina. He just does it all the time, politically speaking.

I suppose he'd be great to play poker with!
