6. I think anyone who hasn't finished 2nd place ANYWHERE
or finished in first place anywhere should definitely pack it in. Let's get on with the business of serious political contention. Sharpton and Kucinich have been valuable in raising issues we care about, and I believe the standard bearers for the party will keep it in the conversation.

I think Lieberman has done nothing but deal himself a historical blow. He did a grerat job crafting Homeland Security bill...but it's been downhill since then.

13. Let 'em stay if they want
It's not like it really matters. Hell, Clark was in a fight for a solid 2nd place coming into today, yet he was getting no media attention whatsoever. If he, Sharpton, Kucinich and Lieberman were to stay in, how would that affect coverage? How could they cover these candidates less and Kerry more?

The only difference would be in future debates. And I feel it even more important that these candidates stay in the race for the debates because they bring up great issues not mentioned by the DLC elites.

8. In 1968, Humphrey did not win ONE primary.
Perhaps he should have dropped out, but I doubt that McCarthy could have beaten Nixon. My point is, even though the Dem Establishment obviously wishes that everyone but Kerry would drop out, there is no reason why they should.

14. I hate to point this out, but this isn't 1968
In 1968, most delegates weren't selected through primaries. That's not the case today. What Humphrey did in 1968 is no longer possible today.

15. No smoke filled rooms anymore?
How do you think that Kerry has gotten massive backstage help from the Dem establishment?? How many Kerry supporters did you see a month ago? How many will be saying in September, "What were we THINKING about?"

This is exactly the way Humphrey got nominated. And Mondale.

16. seems the "smoke-filled backrooms" of yesteryear have been supplanted
It's obviously not the all-white-male machine-type good-ol'boy situations which existed in the form of Virginia Harry F. 'control everything from the courthouse to the state house' Byrd or the Mayor Daley type arrangements ... but, it seems that whatever rule changes the Party put in place c. 1968 - 1972 (which helped Jimmy Carter propel past the 'insider' power elite), either aren't been used or have gone by the wayside.

It seems many of those 'involved' on local-state levels have the ability to pay the $250 and up per plate functions which occur throughout a year.

Our politicians are, for the most part, wealthy; and, that attracts those who like to hob-nob with the rich and the trappings of influence and power.

Corporatism has shaped local politics, as well, as local and state government politicians have schmoozed with the corporate elite in selling the community for doing business.

The behavior of the Al Froms and Vernon Jordans involve vestiges of the backroom politicians.

I'd say it's a good ol'boy network ... but, it's a bit more open, and 'tokening' diverse. It's a corporate-monied interest thing, and it has spilled over into the party infrastructure.

Of course, variations exist depending on the jurisdiction and/or geographical area.

There must be a good ol'boy network, say, in Arkansas - that's one which gets more publicity.

The Republicans are just too obvious, but that's their problem.

10. I just voted no, and thank goodness for my Netscape browser,
with the pop-up blockers. Their web-site is so full of pop-ups, I hear at least 3 or 4 dings everytime I go to a different site on CNN's web.

17. Unfortunately, Yes. Look folks,
Campaigns will keep going as long as there's money to fuel them. The staffers don't want to go looking for jobs. The candidates are always the last people to give up hope. And the true believers are, well, true believers.

But there comes a time when wasting other people's money while simultaneously providing sound bites for Karl Rove is a bad thing.

If Clark doesn't win tonight, he'll drop. He's a class act. Dean will not drop out. He's not a class act.
