CNN's Cafferty: Sen. Specter only thing in the way of dictatorship
Conservative CNN commentator Jack Cafferty responded to the latest story about administration spying on US citizens a couple days ago:

Jack Cafferty: "...We better all hope nothing happens to Arlen Specter, the Republican head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, cause he might be all that’s standing between us and a full-blown dictatorship in this country. He’s vowed to question these phone company executives about volunteering to provide the government with my telephone records and yours and tens of millions of other Americans. Shortly after 9/11, AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth began providing the super-secret NSA with information on phone calls of millions of our citizens. All part of the war on terror, President Bush says. Why don’t you go find Osama bin Laden and seal the country’s borders and start inspecting the containers that come into our ports?"

"The President rushed out this morning in the wake of this front page story in USA Today and declared the government’s doing nothing wrong, and all this is just fine. Is it? Is it legal? Then why did the Justice Department suddenly drop its investigation of the warrant-less spying on citizens? Because the NSA said Justice Department lawyers didn’t have the necessary security clearance to do the investigation. Read that sentence again. A secret government agency has told our Justice Department that it’s not allowed to investigate it. And the Justice Department just says, okay, and drops the whole thing. We’re in some serious trouble here, boys and girls. Here’s the question: Does it concern you that your phone company may be voluntarily providing your phone records to the government without your knowledge or your permission? If it doesn’t, it sure as hell ought to.

Wolf Blitzer: "Words of wisdom, as I said, Jack, outraged, as you clearly are."

1. Specter is a stooge.
If it's up to him to save us, we are screwed. I think we need to save ourselves, and send Specter to spend more time with his family.

2. If Specter is a stooge, what does that make Leslie Blitzer?
Likud Press Secretary?

3. Damn straight
Specter is as much our "saviour" as McCain is a maverick and straight-talker. Save your kudos for someone who really deserves it,Jacko.

5. Well at least he's trying and that's better than nothing. But that
doesn't mean I'm satisfied. It's a crime that these criminals are getting away with these crimes. (Just trying to find a little humor.)

10. fact is...
we need to take over the house or senate. weird that we have a form of government that can, by one party rule, effectively exist as a veritable dictatorship should they choose. but, our current rulers, have so chosen.

6. Specter Has Always Cared About Civil Rights
Edited on Sun May-14-06 10:12 PM by JPZenger
Yes, Specter is concerned about his legacy. This is fine. His interest in civil rights and Constitutional protections is not new. He has always been concerned about them. I am not saying Specter is a savior, but he is one of the few GOP Senators who has been speaking out on matters of abuse of the Constitution. Also remember that Specter is the guy who saved us from Bork on the Supreme Court - instead we got moderate Justice Kennedy in place of Bork.

7. Specter is also one of the guys that gave us Clarence Thomas.
I will never forget the Hill-Thomas hearings, and they were all I need to know about Arlen's integrity.

11. All he's good for
Is sputtering a little when he thinks it's appropriate. He never does a thing
though. Just like the hearing when he refused to swear in, I think it was
Gonzales, when he testified before the Senate.

13. the issue isn't if Specter will save us from a Dictatorship...
but rather the significance of a conservative MSM pundit acknowledging 1) Bush has overstepped his powers as president and 2) as a result, we are on the verge of a dictatorship.
Cafferty could have said anyone or anything was the only thing standing between us and a full-blown dicatorship; it doesn't matter who Cafferty thinks that is, what matters is that he says we are on the verge of a dictatorship.

Helps dilute the swiftboating of "conspiracy theorists" a bit, don't you think?

14. Hell, if he's the only bump in the road, we should be airing up the tires
Was that said to make America feel better or did Cafferty just want us all to scream and run around in circles for a bit?
