"It'll Be Gore?" Andrew Sullivan and Josh Marshall

It'll Be Gore?

A reader predicts:

Thanks again for another fine column ... but it will be Gore in '08, not Hillary. Hillary is like the guy in the gym who only works the upper body and has the biggest arms, chest and shoulders, but his legs (his base, if you will) are weak. Just like the top heavy gym stud who can easily be beaten by a quick blow to his legs, Hillary (who has really bad legs!) can be toppled too.
Feingold (the Dean of '08) will hit Hillary hard and undercut her liberal support-supposedly her rock solid base. Now, I can hear you scream at your screen, "that's just what Hillary wants - a candidate that makes her look less liberal!"
Yeah ... but once Feingold exposes that Hillary has been wrong on so many issues Dems care about (Iraq, civil liberties, Iraq, attacking Bush), she'll be reduced to normal size for others to take on. Gore can sit back and watch Feingold do the dirty work and get in as Hillary weakens.
Gore's big advantages: he's been right on the issues, he retains stature among Democrats, and, surprisingly, he'll appear fresh from being away so long. Other than SNL last night, when was the last time you saw Gore on TV (and if you didn't see Gore on SNL...go to Crooksandliars.com for a very good laugh!)?
Gore-Warner is the winning ticket in '08.

I'd dismiss this if a very canny Republican hadn't said exactly the same thing to me the other night. I still cannot see it. But in politics, anything can happen, I suppose.

http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2006/05/itll_be_gore.html

Andrew Sullivan just published an email from a reader who says it'll be Al Gore in 2008 for the Democrats, not Hillary. I could see it. I could totally see it.

I don't think Hillary is anywhere near as strong as she looks or as people seem to think she is. And Gore would be formidable.

1. I really enjoyed the part about it not being Hillary in 08...
...but as far as the rest of it's concerned, it's W-A-Y to early to tell.

But I like the Hillary part. Seriously.

4. The idea of someone other that Hillary warms my heart
She is so bad for the party. Gore, Feingold, Warner, Clark, and some of the others are much more representative.

15. For me it has never been an issue of...
..."Will she be the right person for the job some day?"

It's an issue of I don't think she's right for 2008 and I can't picture any scenario in which she'd win.

I don't follow her in minutiae detail, but I believe there's merit in the discussions of her "move to the right." She's not Joe Lieberman or Zell Miller, but she's also not the person I'd like to see taking the reins from Bush.

21. It is way too early but I was just sharing the chatter. I thought the
reader's e-mail to Sullivan was interesting and Josh's comments too.

3. I like Al Gore.
I always have, and I voted for him in 2000 with no regrets. And he has really come out of his shell since then. I will be supporting him for 2008. Please, Al, run! We need you!

5. 'Saw this over on TPM. It could happen.
Gore is a player if he wants to be, and Senator Clinton must know that a lot of residual affection for Gore resides in state and county party Chairs.

8. There are still Jacobites who toast...
... "The King over the Water"

And that was three hundred, not eight, years ago.

13. There are. But I doubt if any is a party or county chair for Democrats

these days. These folks are 5th and 6th and 7th generation daughters and sons of immigrants from (mostly) Europe or Africa, or points south in this hemisphere, and their party focus is on electing Democrats in their regions.

Many of them were quoted in recent weeks and months about various potential candidates. Some like Warner, some like Edwards, some like Kerry, etc. Some like Gore.

6. that's a great picture of Gore
would be happy to support him as i did in 2000. i'm not too sure about their theory of how he would get the nomination though. at some point Hillary herself will have to go up against whoever else runs and make her position known.

7. Gore - Clinton?
Personally, I like Gore-Kerry, 8 years, alternating President every 2 years.

10. Wish that'd been the 2000 ticket!
I think a Gore/Kerry ticket would've worked well in 2000, but since Kerry's already been the Democratic presidential candidate, stepping down to vice presidential candidate would be too great a loss of stature. I'm thinking maybe Gore/Clark could happen, though.

9. Funny how conservatives have such a blind spot when it comes to Hillary.
They think Hillary has this bedrock of Democratic support when most Democrat primary voters are the least suspicious and at the most quite anti-Hillary. Meanwhile, Gore seems to be the name on everyone's lips. What's not to see? If Gore wants the nomination, it's his for the taking. Meanwhile, wingnuts keep sending their dogs after Hillary. Fine by me!

20. Conservatives dont have a blind spot.
At least not the ones on TV touting Hillary as the Dem of choice in '08. Two things, one they know she doesn't have a chance in hell of winning and two, just mentioning that she might run fires up their base. 2 for 1 deal.
