Atrios has transcript of Leahy on with Blitzer....A Must Read!
Finally a Dem speaks the truth! "9/11" happened on BUSH WATCH...not Clinton or Poppy or Reagan or Carter, etc. And, it could have been prevented according to Leahy. :applause:

-Snip-

On the NSA wiretapping program
LEAHY: And some might question: what does that give us? I mean, it's like drinking from a fire hose. We should be spying on terrorists, not spying on innocent Americans.

If you have hundreds of millions of phone calls you're trying to track a day, what do you get out of it? Remember, this is the same administration that had the information that could have stopped 9/11 from happening. They didn't translate it until September 12.

On the Bush Administration
LEAHY: Every time this administration screws up, whether it's with homeland security, after Katrina, a massive failure even though they spent billions of dollars to make sure that thing wouldn't happen, when they screw up along the border, when they get caught doing illegal surveillance of Americans, they say, well, but 9/11, 9/11.

Well, I'd remind them 9/11 happened on their watch. I think Americans are getting fed up with simply using an excuse for your mistakes and classify everything else so that you can't talk about it.

I want us to be safe. I don't think that this administration is doing it the right way. They screwed up with homeland security. They screwed up with Katrina. I mean, after all, they were told, go catch a 6'6" Arab running around Afghanistan, probably on dialysis, according to the press reports, Osama bin Laden.

1. As a Vermonter...
I'm proud to say Pat's one of my reps in the senate. I think this guy's the real deal. I once say him in a Laundry-mat in Montpelier, along w/ his wife doing their own wash. Anybody here think that Frist ever shoves quarters into a top-loader?

2. Bush and the CONS failed America pathetically on 9/11
9/11 could have been prevented.

The CONS let America down.

And now they lie about it.

5. Any minute now, Bush will talk about a thrawted terrorist attack
Every time Bush gets into a corner, he finds a way to bring up 9-11 fears. Any minute now, I expect Bush to bring up some story about a terrorist attack that was stopped. Remember last year, when he brought up a supposed Al Qaida attack on a high rise in Los Angeles. The mayor knew nothing about it, and the incident was apparently at least 3 years old and never moved past the idea stage. However, Bush made it sound like it was just stopped yesterday with only minutes to spare.

The GOP will run on fear in November. Be afraid, voters, be very afraid. However, don't expect the Administration to do anything about the real threats - inside shipping containers.

6. Yep - it's time to raise the TERRALERT to tangerine.
Actually it's funny that they have pretty much given up on the terra code colorizationals. I suppose it'll make a come back as we get closer to the election.

8. Good for him! Great that he named 9/11 -- not only as a tired excuse --
but also as a tragedy that happened on *'s watch. And just one tragedy/screw-up among many.

I've so had it with these Get-Along-Guss milquetoast Dems. Great to hear a patriot speak the truth!

:patriot:
