<The price and intensity of the Democratic gubernatorial primary shot up Friday as Steve Westly sank $5 million more into his campaign and released the first negative ad in the race - a commercial assailing Phil Angelides for seeking to impose "massive" new taxes on Californians.

The Westly ad, which broke his campaign pledge not to initiate negative ads assailing Angelides by name, takes issue with Angelides' call for new taxes on wealthy Californians to fund schools.>
