Who Gets to Play Gerry Ford This Time?
No way does Cheney finish his term. Whether it's his involvement in NSA lawbreaking, the Plame case, or others of his depredations, the proverbial villagers with torches and pitchforks are en route to that friggin monster's castle. Removal, resignation, health -- Who knows? But no way does he make it until 2009.

So who'll Bush nominate to replace him? That's no small matter.

Considering Iraq, all the festering GOP messes, and (especially) the fact that Dubya's Dubya, I'd say the chances of his halting or reversing his poll decline are zero. At this point, there's no longer a guarantee that even his ordering U.S. military belligerence would rally the country. As a matter of fact, if he were to pull something like that in the current political climate, it could prove to be the death knell for the GOP for a long time to come. The political landscape has changed pretty dramatically in the last six or eight months. Bush's approval numbers have plummeted from a workable 45 percent or so just last autumn until he's now knocking at the door of the 20s. As America likes and trusts him less and less, I'm inclined to think that if he staged a military or "terror" episode of some kind, a very large percentage of our citizenry would (as they sadly failed to do in the run-up to the 2004 election) immediately see the dog being wagged, bring the "undecideds" along with them, and that's the end of Bush for good and his party for a while.

So who will BushCo try to install as our next president?

Frist? Santorum? Katherine Harris? Tommy (rested and ready) Thompson?

This is too stinkin weird to contemplate.

3. Thank You
I've been stopping by very intermittently since the middle of last year, I guess. I've always enjoyed the give and take here -- wish I had more time to engage!

5. Then we could force the issue of global warming--see where JM stands...
...With the energy companies or with Earth. Note that McCain and Lieberman "authored" the Climate Protection Act that is going nowhere under Beast/Cheney

9. I agree
The GOP doesn't really want him to be president. If they can get him to do something really unpopular, he'd only serve a year or so, and get voted out, maybe even in the primaries.

7. I'd Guess You Were Mostly Kidding ...
... but I can visualize that actually happening so fast it's not funny.

But maybe that'd be not so bad: a caretaker Bush who's also a jerk but not completely imbecilic, who's mostly defanged by Dem majorities in congress, and who'll lose in 08. Okay, it could be worse.

8. I could see Bush putting Jethro Jeb in as VP...
Dumb and Goober would be quite a hoot in the White House.

Bush would try to justify it by stating he has to have someone he can trust in that position, because trust is important.

Of course, the fact that most Americans don't trust Bush doesn't matter. Ah, the double standards of the GOP are mind boggling!
