9/11 allowed them to become much more open about their disdain for our freedoms. The PATRIOT Act was, for the most part, just a bunch of stuff the extreme-authoritarian-right had been drooling over for a while. It was like a wish list for fascists. I worry it will just get glazed over though, hey, it's not that bad -- if you aren't doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about... and people will get used to it. Reminds me of the nightmare once known as the Soviet Union.
