Folks the speach was a bust
with the base. Yes I took one for the team, and I went and watched some FOX after the speech... if this had not been a flop they would have staid on it, like CNN did (remarkably for an MSM outlet they did a fair job). No folks the good ol' boys at FOX were mostly concentrating on fluff stories, such as the Duke University Rape Story... not the speech.

So my feeling is... it flopped

By the way, this was probably bush's best speech... hey he could speak in coherent sentences... and some of it made sense (like fine employers who hire legals) Of course as they say the devil is in the details and he has proven repeatedly that if he says the sky is blue, we'd better check.

But on the delivery and to a point substance... probably his best speech (from a mass communications perspective that is) Oh and to the guard to the border... they are just this side of Posee, they will not be armed and will be assigned to support roles. Of course as Durbin pointed out (and those of us who are paying attention already knew)... so far they have refused to approve the money needed to hire the necessary number of agents... but that is a whole different kettle of fish.

Now I need to go take a shower... Fox, oy vey but I guess their lack of coverage after Britt Hume was done with it speaks volumes.

He did talk about a fence, although the word WALL would have been better.

Like a broken clock, Dick is right twice a day. But not on the President's speech or his attempt to ram amnesty down our throats.

Arguably America’s most prominent American political consultant, Dick Morris tells NewsMax that President Bush’s key national address on immigration reform Monday night was "a great speech.”

Uh Oh!..........this can't be good.

No, he's not right... Bill Schneider of CNN declared "Bush just lost his base" two seconds after the speech ended, so it must be true.

2. Yep. My Canadian sweetheart just said,"For the first time, I can
agree with much of what he is saying" (watching replay on Countdown).

If she is saying this, the 'base' is plucking chickens and warming the tar.

3. People have finally learned to recognize a fraud
when they see one. Let's see, Bush has had six years in office, and solid Republican majorities in both houses, and now, only now, does he tackle illegal immigration. Hmmm, I wonder why?

I oppose illegal immigration, but coming from this administration, this is a blatant appeal to the xenophobic and nativist part of his base. I especially balked at the appeal to bipartisanship and his urging folks not to play politics with this issue. Hasn't this administration done exactly that, not just with this issue, but every issue?

4. It was a political move
he is trying to appeal to the base... but as I said, I don't think it worked

Now as a naturalized citizen... the way I see it is... no practical way to deport 12 million people... that said... it is not as simple as posting more guards at the border, nor amnesty or a new incarnation for the bracero program.

I went through the process and I don't have a problem with these folks going to the back of the line. Hell it took me 12 years... this means 20-25 for these folks...

that said the reason why the pukes oppose it, the real nativist base... these folks come out of the shadows they will join unions...

8. No one listens to him any more
they know that everything he says is a lie, or completely politically motivated, with no feeling behind it. This was just an attempt to get a few more fundies out of the house on 11/7 - the kickoff to Rove's "armageddon strategy".

Edit: Thanks for taking one for the team. I haven't listened to Smirk since 9/14/01, and have never watched FNC.

12. Ok I couldn't resist switching over to see what he was saying
I got there just in time for the fake wounded immigrant story. You know, the poor immigrant that picked vegetables with his family when a kid and joined the service as soon as he was able and all he asks is that the guy who saved him get a promotion and himself to have a chance to become a citizen. How f'ing stupid does he think we are? I gave up fairy tales long ago. And since when does he go and talk to wounded soldiers. Yeah, George, that happened, right! He mangled the guys name so bad all the times he said it that you aren't able to even check if there is such a person. aaarrrggghhh, sorry, it turned into a rant! Btw, ny husbands family came over on the mayflower, related to Winslows and Winthrops, etc. Guess what he did when he was a boy. He and his family picked fruits and vegetables. Left their native Mass. to travel to crops.

This is something he totally could have done on the radio over the weekend. They're trying to give the impression they're busy working on something NOT involving wiretapping.

18. It was a meaningless speech. Why did he do it?
The national guard isn't going to be used that way. It was all nonsense. It was reminiscent of the "trip to mars" or the steroid thing at the sotu. He is a hopeless clod.
