Zogby- Majority of Democrats support amnesty
Edited on Tue May-16-06 12:01 AM by Tiggeroshii
This is a response to those posts insisting the Democratic leadership is failing the base by supporting amnesty. I don't think so...

As Congress now works on immigration reform legislation in Washington, the survey shows there is a significant partisan divide on this question. Among Democrats nationwide, 51% favor amnesty, while 29% oppose it and another 20% said they are unsure. Among Republicans, just 13% said they favor amnesty, while 76% said they oppose such an offer.

1. The majority of Democrats are more compassionate and want
something that will work for the people who are here illegally; they don't want to burn them at the stake or shoot them at the border.
Let's find a viable alternative to angering everyone.

PS WHY aren't AMERICANS worried about their own civil liberties being robbed by this administration?
Now let's rumble on that! I'm so angry about that!

2. Which just goes to show
How muddled our message gets. Sure, 51% of Democrats support "amnesty", which isn't even being proposed by any Democrats. But that's about 25% of the population and how we end up losing elections. The question shouldn't even be asked. Amnesty is not being proposed. Democrats have the right answer to immigration, earned citizenship, increased labor law enforcement, better wages, more security on the borders. It's absolutely nothing new. We let the right wing turn it into an amnesty wedge and that's never what it was.

3. Kennedy-McCain really was an amnesty proposal.
Anything proposing that illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship even through a set of guidlines is a form of amnesty, is it not?

4. No
It's not. Amnesty is show up at an INS agency and register. There's no legislation proposing that. The 1986 bill was amnesty. All they had to do was show they had been in the country before 1982, get a physical and not have any felonies, and they could get citizenship or farmworker documents. There was nothing about taxes, fines, citizenship tests, etc. The current bill is not amnesty and they do have to get in line behind anybody else applying for citizenship. It's not amnesty. But if the people who want them to go back home have their way, they may well settle for the temporary worker program thinking there won't be so many of them coming in. But without real citizenship and enforcement, it'll just create a revolving door and more labor competition than we have now. Calling McCain-Kennedy amnesty is a dangerous game to play.

7. Here
Read up on the Mariana Islands. Click my link in this thread, and after you click the blog, click the links in that blog post too. I've been following these scoundrels and their tactics for a long time. They make me sick.

There are also some immigrants who are off base too, who don't understand what will happen with this revolving door guest worker program. This one has a link to an article about Global Horizons and their guest worker practices. I was horrified when some immigration group in Cali signed a contract with them. They don't know what they're doing. There's a lot of disinformation all the way around.

6. Sign up to participate in ZOGBY polling here:
http://interactive.zogby.com/pollregistration/registrat...

It's good to give your opinion, it's also good to see what government is thinking about...for instance, the poll I got today had lots of questions about catching Osama Bin Laden and whether that would make me feel better or worse about Bush. There were also lots of questions about last night's speech.

You can always choose 'no answer' to any questions that feel intrusive (like income, religion, etc.)

Sign up. Be counted.
