It doesn't matter what Dean said on the 700 Club
It only matters that he came off as sane, reasonable, and intelligent. All of which he accomplished with aplomb.

Look, ain't nobody who watches Pat Robertson likely to vote for a Democrat. But a LOT of 'em are VERY unhappy with Bush and the Congressional Repubs. The ONLY chance Repubs have of winning in '06 is if they can get their base out en masse, and the main way they're doing that is by asking, Do you want Democrats in control of Congress? And who's the biggest buggaboo they trot out as the quinteseential nutty socialist Democrat? Well, after Hillary, it's Howard. Doesn't matter that it's not true. Most 700 Clubbers don't know jack about Dean first-hand, except maybe from seeing "The Scream" played over and over on Fox News. But they quake in their boots at the thought of guys like Dean running the country.

If they can be made to realize Dean, and the rest of us by extension, aren't so bad, they're more likely to stay at home in November. That's all we need to win.

Dean succeeded on CBN. It was very smart, not to mention brave, for him to appear there.

1. But if the preachers supporting the Talibornagains
are telling their flocks that they will go to hell if they vote for a Democrat, what good did it really do? If you think I'm making this up, a fellow who called in to Guy James said that his pastor had told him that he would go to hell if he didn't support all Republicans.

I don't mind Dean speaking say, at a UCC convention-at least there you know he'd pick up some votes. I don't see this action as really being helpful if the ministers undermine it with anti-Democratic tirades.

3. Is it not better to have a tirade answered rather than sit out there
with no counterbalance.

If Dean got even one voter to decide that its okay to sit this one out, is that not one more vote for our side?

4. You got that right
Dean came across as a reasonable and caring human being, not the caricature the morons have been fed on that appalling network for far too long.

It was enough to plant a seed of doubt in the jungle of true belief.

And whole revolutions have started on less.

Good for Dean.

5. I think you missed my point
I know you're absolutely right that those preachers are telling their flocks not to vote for Democrats. And most of them... no, almost all of them will do what they're told.

But we don't need those people to vote for us. We just need them to sit at home and not vote at all. That's almost the very same thing.

And ya know, I'm sure some of those preachers will pound into their congregations how they owe it to Jesus to go vote for some Republican. But it's a whole lot easier for the congregant to say to his/herself, well, I should go vote, but I gotta get my hair done, or take off from work early, or miss Seventh Heaven on TV (or whatever it is they watch), so I'll just be sure to vote next time.

For that matter, some of those preachers might not be quite as eager to spend their sermon time on politics as they might have been in a different year. Some of them aren't too happy with what the Repubs haven't accomplished that they think they ought to have. They can be persuaded too that maybe a couple years of Democrats controlling Congress won't be too bad. Teach those GOP ingrates a lesson, and afterall, they've got Bush to veto anything too crazy we might accomplish, right?

God wouldn't let us impeach his ass, would He?

2. Reagan didn't have to beat Carter in the debates, just look human
Edited on Tue May-16-06 03:29 PM by ItsTheMediaStupid
A lot of people were afraid of the RW at the time, as they should have been.

Reagan put a likeable face on conservatism.

Then he tried to claim ketchup was a vegetable in the school lunch program as a cost cutting measure.
