Oh come on.

You know Pat Robertson, the racist nut he is, is bound to give one of his little hate sermons about how those who don't speak English are sinners.

We should start a pool!! :bounce:

1. I think the official language should be Pig Latin
that's one language our retarded President might be able to speak with fluency.

2. THANK GOD FOR ENGLISH ONLY
that's sure to stop people from illegally entering the country, makes our borders secure, stops terrorists, and I think it can be used get rid of nasty grass stains too... :sarcasm:

Wedge issue? you bet. Why bring it up now when there are much more IMPORTANT and VITAL issues/problems? Simple - to get votes on the record and use it in the 2006-campaign season for clubbing opponents with it.

What exactly will this solve? Nothing. Are they going to lock people up who don't speak English? Will there be "English Police" who scour our language for 'foreign words'? Will they shut down TACO BELL? What about "ethnic" restaurants that have their menus in 2 or more languages - fine them, shut them down?

Ever notice on an employment application where it asks you if you speak a foreign language? Will that now be illegal? Are interpreters now out of jobs?

Do people with names of ethnic origin have to change them to an "acceptable" English only version?

What about LATIN phrases on our documents and on our MONEY? or LATIN terms used in medical/legal environments?

3. We had this stupid argument in Florida years ago. It was stupid then
and it's stupid now. It was voted down thankfully. Frankly, I don't understand either side of this issue. Speaking a foreign language is based on economics. If you can live comfortably without knowing English, there is no reason to learn it. If you need to survive learning it, you will. As for the "English only side" - why are there people who even care? Gov't forms can only be in English? Gov't is the employee to the people. If a lot of people speak a foreign language - then the gov't should help out and have forms in foreign languages.
