Laura Bush urged 900 graduates of Roger Williams University not to "neglect millions of people around the world living under tyranny."

"It may be hard to imagine," she added, "but there are countries whose governments spy on their entire populations, and where people can't attend political events unless they sign loyalty oaths. There are countries where the press is bullied into submission, and where high-ranking personnel is traded between the government and propagandistic news organizations. There are countries that defy the Geneva Convention and commit torture and imprison people indefinitely without due process. There are countries that deny health care to their citizens and that have courts so corrupt they forbid recounts for elections clouded by voting fraud. There are countries that are in the pocket of a handful of wealthy interests and that refuse to investigate rampant government criminality, corruption, and incompetence. There's even a country I heard of that sent its young men and women halfway across the world to fight a war for an ever-changing series of reasons, each of which has proven to be an outright lie. I know it's hard to believe, but it really does happen!"
