"Lieberman wins!"
For sometime now I am spammed with e-mail from Joementum's campaign (as a result of sending him angry letters in the past).
I didn't discard this one because of the catchy title (thread header). here it is:

Dear Friends:

Last night, an overwhelming majority of delegates to the State Party's Nominating Convention, voted to send Joe Lieberman back to the United States Senate!!

Although the final tally, a decisive 67% to 33%, leaves Joe as the Party's endorsed candidate and we feel confident about our victory in August, we have hard work to do over the next weeks and months.

This work begins tomorrow, when we enter the next phase of our campaign ... with the opening of our campaign office in New Haven.

With your continued support, we will have a repeat of last night's VICTORY on August 8th!!!

Best,

Sean

Sean Smith

Can someone explain to me why is the party involved in endorsing candidates in the primary BEFORE voters had even a chance to know who is running?
Anyway, I posted this as a heads up to local activists - don't let this one slither back in!

3. Actually, in a very important way Lieberman lost.
By getting 33% of the endorsement vote, Lamont forced a primary in August (he needed only 15%). Of course the state party endorsed Joe - that was a foregone conclusion - but it might be a whole different ball game when he actually has to face the voters.

15. It's already red.
Lieberman may be wearing a blue coat, but he's got a red voting record.

Putting a moderate Republican in the seat instead of Lieberman might even be an improvement.

19. We need majority, so the real question is could Ned win in the GE.
TWO ITEMS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE
ITEM ONE: WE NEED POWER IN THE FORM OF CONTROL
Even if Joe votes red, since his alignment is blue having him win the GE helps us with the primary goal of obtaining the all-important majority. Majority isn't just about individual votes; it's about controlling committees, subcommittees, and so-on. We need to get the majority in the Senate. Without that power the agenda of reason and compassion (that's my name for the Dem agenda :-) whatever that is)cannot be implemented.

ITEM TWO: WE NEED POWER IN THE FORM OF VOTES
The agenda of reason and compassion cannot be implemented if people don't vote for individual items. So we need Senators who will vote "the right way," i.e. for the people.

ALGORITHM FOR DETERMINING WHETHER TO SUPPORT A CHALLENGER SHOULD GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS
(Notice that STEP ONE and STEP TWO can be swapped with little adjustment)
STEP ONE: Determine the odds for the challenger to win in the GE if nominated.
(Take, for example Marcy Winograd in the 36th congressional distinct in California. She is challenging Jane Harmon and has about a 100% chance of winning the GE.)
IF THE ODDS ARE GOOD, PROCEED TO STEP TWO.
IF THE ODDS ARE TERRIBLE, DO NOT ENDORSE.

STEP TWO: Determine whether the challenger's platform and justifies the conclusion that this person would be more effective at implementing the agenda of reason and compassion than the incumbent.

IF THE CONCLUSION IS JUSTIFIED, PROCEED TO STEP THREE.
IF THE CONCLUSION IS NOT JUSTIFIED, DO NOT ENDORSE
(In the case of Marcy Winograd, the answer is that it is justified. So we proceed to step three.)

STEP THREE: Determine how MUCH more effective the challenger would be.

IF ONLY A LITTLE MORE EFFECTIVE, VOTE FOR THEM IN THE PRIMARY IF THE DEMOCRATS DON'T LOSE TOO MUCH SENIORITY ON THE COMMITTEES THE INCUMBENT IS ON

IF SOMEWHAT MORE EFFECTIVE, VOTE FOR THEM IN THE PRIMARY.

IF SIGNIFICANTLY MORE EFFECTIVE, DONATE MONEY AND VOLUNTEER.
(Unfortunately for my bank account Winograd falls into this category. :( )

6. State partys often make endorsements. I also think Joe will win in Aug.
And the very sad thing is, I think Joe will win in August. And he will have every dem on the country batting for him, including gore, kennedy, kerry, and obama (already has the latter).
Prove me wrong, Conn.!!! I so much want to be wrong.

14. The DNC will not gun for Lamont. Howard Dean said so
Howard Dean said that the DNC will not get involved in in-state party primaries. That's for the state's Democrats to decided who they want on the November ballot.

10. I got the same email -- here's my reply
HI,

As a lifelong Democrat, I’m happy to be supporting your opponent, Ned Lamont. I find your candidate to represent values contrary to the Democratic Party, and will not miss seeing him in office when there is a true Democrat available to represent the people’s interests.

Please take me off your mailing list.

17. Lieberman the war monger
Isn't Joe Lieberman the man who voted to invade Iraq at he the cost of many thousands of lives and still shows no remorse? Shame on the people who voted for him.

Plus he basically warned us not to be critical of our commander in chief during wartime...That's why they call him Ho'Joe.

21. theres a difference between
pragmaticsm/moderation & actually undermining your pary. I use to really like Joe Liberman, I felt he was a humble and warm guy, as a Jew myself I really wanted him to get to the top. But now I see he has bent over backwards for the GOP and specifically the elite establishment. This was evident on his Fox News interviews.

22. I am neither Christian nor Jewish (nor any religion)
but I was originally excited at the prospect of a Jewish vice president ... That's why now it kills me when some people say that we dislike Lieberman because of anti-semitism. I think in 99% of cases (there will always be a few nuts in the bunch), nothing could be further from the truth. We dislike him for the way he has seemingly gone out of his way not only to NOT stick up for our side, but to dis us at every opportunity.

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:
