their inability to shut the fuck up about it. I can't believe there is a single living human on the planet who does not at this time know where to go find Jesus if they are so inclined. It has driven me from sick of it to needing to remove myself from religious discussion entirely with those that want to evangelize me. The only remaining family I have are evangelical missionaries who want to take me to a wacko church and have me healed, not certain what from but maybe my nasty attitude?
I BELIEVE but that is never ever enough.
If I offended anyone I am sorry. When my brother was dying they decided to use that time to try to get to me. I have little tolerance for their kind anymore. AND all of the above.

Americans to have to live by. The idea of codifying their narrow view of Christianity into laws and creating a theocracy in subversion of the Constitution is what I dislike most. All that is listed in the polls are symptoms/actions based on the politicized religious right's efforts to legislate their narrow view of Christianity onto all other Americans.

my religion from me and so many millions of others.
They have reduced Christianity to a series of slogans and bumperstickers and have lost its meaning.
They have made it a laughingstock and have made many of us ashamed to be associated with them.
They have preached a religion of hate and divisiveness, and have denigrated love and inclusivenes.
After so many centuries of religious acrimony, they have refused to learn the lessons of history and risk bringing back the dark days of Inquisition and witchhunts.

the regressive fundamentalist churches as possible. Those are the ones I find to be an embarassment, and I resent some people identifying me with them.
I am a member of a Quaker meeting, and am currently attending a local UU church. I have worked on progressive issues with various Reformed, Congregational (UCC), Methodist, Catholic and Presbyterian churches and am looking to find a few others.
Where I'm living now, though, progressive churches are at a premium. There are a few UCCs and UUs and some very small Quaker meetings, but it's a fairly conservative area overall.

29. My problems with the Religious Reichstag: |
|
Their insistance of trying to ram their beliefs down everyone's throat. I resent the hell out of that.
At my last job, I was taking an order over the telephone. The gentleman on the other end asks me if I had Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. I told him this was not the time or place to discuss that. Personally, your religious beliefs are personal and are between you and your higher power. I resented the hwll out of that too.
The smug, superior attitudes that some Christians have about being saved. I know they're not perfect. Some in the religious reichstag use their religion as an EZ-Pass for getting away with almost murder.

39. Anti-Catholicism beneath the "brotherly Christian" love-dove crap |
|
What I've always found most insidious about the religiosu right is their disengenuous attempts to reach out to Catholics and to try to trick Catholics into believing there is room in the religious right's manifold, by focusing on social issues, knowing that Catholics must be:
1.) Against the death penalty 2.) Against the Iraq War and most aggressive, unnecessary wars in general (what John Paul II affirmed) 3.) Willing to tackle poverty and condemn greed and selfish libertarian politics 4.) Respect Jews and not support Israel for the right reasons but simply out of a hideous desire to see Jesus come down out of the sky and promptly throw the Jews into fiery hell for all of eternity 5.) Willing to accept fellow Catholics of all colors from Latin America and Africa, whereas most Protestant Fundamentalist Conservatives are disgruntled white men who hate European-Protestant immigrants, much less brown skinned Catholics 6.) Supportive of those Catholics in Northern Ireland who have been oppressed, while Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson prefer to buddy up to bloodthirsty scum like Ian "kill-all-papists" Paisley

45. Welcome to DU Grebrook! And very interesting post. |
|
I had many Catholic friends growing up and none of them were like these right winged fundies. Now that I am in the south it seems like there are more Baptists than anything.
All of those things you listed ARE Catholic beliefs yet the fundies try and stuff them aside and include Catholics in their numbers - like the emails I get that way %85 of Americans believe in God as if everyone wants to turn the US into a Theocracy. It is really a very small % of people who believe this but they do things to make themselves look bigger.
The fundies need to be reminded that Catholics do not approve of war or the death penalty.

Hatred for people of different religions, or even different ideological positions within their own religion.
The only difference between the Religious Right in the US and Islamic extremists in the Middle East is the religion. Both are willing to use terrorism to achieve their goals.

46. Simply everything! And after seeing "DaVinci Code," (semi-fictional), or |
|
not...I finally 'see' the Pagan-root in Christianity throug history. Extremely so in Religious Right. (i.e., Robertson's quotes on "killing world leaders, or Shrub and Pickle's "sign" to the camera of that hand sign (two opposing fingers up). A sign denoting pagan worship...but instead "defended" by their press "contacts" rather unconvincingly as support for a Texas sports team.
Aside from "accidentally" running over her "ex" boyfriend, Pickles has that UNDENIABLE 'serpant' look; and Shrub's reference to personal conversations wit God, justifying War, and approving torturure...do NOT at all allign with TRUE religious devotion, but rather the "Paganistic" basis of Christianity as explained in "DaVinci Code."
In short, the Religious Right, scares the be-jeeesus out of me.

Jesus said love others as I have loved you - pretty simple to me. He did not say love others (except if they are gay, or poor, or without healthcare, a home or jobs, or a minority or preganant). He did not say only love white guys who are rich.

Homosexuality, abortion, HPV vaccines, etc. They are all matters of privacy.
I don't get why people can't deal with gays. Who cares? I'd rather live next door to gay people than the fighting crackhead straight couple I currently have as neighbors. I'd trust the average gay person to babysit before I'd trust my current neighbors, too.
I understand their problems with abortion, even if I disagree with them. I don't have a problem with them criticizing it, I have a problem with them trying to make it illegal.
The HPV vaccine controversy is just insane on their part.
