Funny how the talk died down for a Constl Amndmt to allow a naturalized
citizen to be president.

Weren't a whole lot of repubs pushing for that at the time? At least one western senator was all hot and bothered in his speeches about how unfair that Constitutional limitation was - I mean we might be prevented from having the best person for the job *subliminal insert here {Schwartzeneggar} end GOP subliminal inser*

Haven't heard about that proposed constitutional amendment in years... since, about the time Arnie's polling took a nose dive (which didn't take long to occur.)

Point being: there are often GOP subtle "goals" of noble sounding Constitutional Amendments (heck they also put forth some pretty nefarious on the face Constitutional amendments). Look for the real intention - be clear about it... then as the public sees it, interest seems to always die down.

Remember during Bushsr's campaign - we were going to have an anti flag burning amendment (as that was such a serious problem back in 1988) the goal - grab loyal reagan voters to stay with Bush though they didn't really like him by painting bushsr as a "Patriot" (he's gonna save the flag, after all...)

Sidenote - can you believe GOPers believed that Arnie would be so popular that the only way to keep power would be to try to change the Constitution in order to let him run for president? HAHAHA funny thought now, isn't it.

1. Orrin Hatch was big on that idea once...
I always liked Carl Rowan's description of him: "Senator Unctuous".

3. Orrin Hatch... funny to try to watch him pretend to be giving examples
of people who were immenently qualified (I believe he even threw out the name of Former Sec of State Albright... as if Albright and Arnie are even in the same universe per being qualified) as if he was in a serious discussion.

Senator Unctuous. Heh. I always rather thought of him as a batman villain - wasn't there a "Pruneface" villain?

6. Someone should tell Orrin about that seat cushion that is held to his ass
by suction.

4. Some of the SAME people are saying we should end the citizenship rights
of children born to illegal aliens in this country. They are such constition lovers, aren't they?

BTW I actually think naturalized citizens should be permitted to run for president. And I am not worried about Arnie. He doesn't stand a fart's chance in hell. He would never have won the governorship of California except for their flukey recall provision.

5. I think they -- like the citizens of California . . .
Had a chance to take the measure of the man. He's not nearly crazy enough for the fundies, although he valiantly tried to appear so for awhile. Nor is he SuperPolitico -- he makes mistakes as well as smart plays.

I also think he's come to realize the type of folks he'd have to crawl in bed with to go farther than he has, and the prospect didn't seem so attractive.

However, he's quite likely to win another, full term, because the opposition to him on the Dem side is looking a bit weak.

8. An easy solution
There are a lot of parents who have adopted children from outside of the U.S. - and not just John Roberts with his two perfect Irish kids. :p There are also some Governors (Dem and Rep) who emigrated as children. They legally can't ever run for President, because they're naturalized. So, an easy compromise would be to allow anyone who emigrated and became a citizen before their 18th birthday to have the same rights as someone born on American soil. That way, you could prevent The Gropinator running for President, but not someone who was brought here because their parents wished to become Americans.
