"A participant in an ongoing criminal enterprise"
That is how Jonathan Turley, on Olberman's news show, referred to Alberto Gonzales. His reasoning: The NSA spy thing is a criminal act. Gonzo was part and parcel of that, if not in doing it, certainly in rationalizing it and now in threatening reporters with prosecution if they report any of the facts.

Turley also avers that the press is the last line of defense against an out of control executive.

That last statement, which is demonstrably true, leaves me chilled to my bones.

1. It is very chilling...
it seems that the fascist rhetoric has been ratcheted up quite a bit this week, via Gonzales

2. Yes. Turler also said he was going to testify before congress
next week I think.

What scared me the most was when he said we are treading in new territory now, so he couldn't predict how this whole mess would turn out.

I honestly though that the SC decision of the 70's against the gov't when Nixon tried something like this made Gonzo's threats impossible to carry out, but I trust Turley, and I didn't like his uncerainty at all.

3. It also explains why we're seeing non stories in the MSM,
i believe the fourth estate is running a bit scared of this admin. And for good reason i might add, they have shown time and time again they have no scruples.

Peace!

5. News of spying on reporters was deliberate, IMHO
just another tactic to keep reporters and whistleblowers from leaking important information about GOP crimes.

8. Agreed!
I heard this story last week, but haven't heard anything since. One reporter was talking about the NSA spying on reporters, trying to find out who their sources were.

I may be totally wrong here, but isn't that domestic spying? isn't that illegal? If AG Gonzales wants to peruse leaker's, then he better remember who leaked the story of Valerie Plame.

He also needs to remember who gave the legal advice that the NSA were on legal ground to do warrant less wiretapping within the US.

Peace!

9. Might it be possible that the media (what's left of the honest part of it)
could start a more serious campaign to get the news out now?

While most of teevee is just plain fucked, some of the print media, and a good bit of the internet media, is still trying. They just don't get the attention teevee does.

That's not to say that all print media is honest. That is surely NOT the case.

10. I concur, some print and net media do a good job!
Not all media is bad by any means, but with this admin they're taking a hugh risk when they print stories that have been deemed classified by the admin.

That's why it so important for John Q Public to stay informed, because this admin is classifying ever piece of paper that goes through the WH, and IMHO they're doing this so they will be able to file charges against journalist.

The FBI just searched a congressman capitol hill office, clearly a violation of separation of power. There is a hugh grab for power going on in Washington, so much so the speaker of the house (R) came out against the FBI search of said congressman who happens to be a DEM.

Washington the capitol of our country, built on a swamp well it's apropos.

Peace!

11. Sometimes it all seems a huge (hugh?) orchestrated Kabuki dance
I have no idea what to make of Hastert's statement of (feigned?) outrage.

As to getting Johnnie Q to see what's going on, that's kinda hard when Johnnie Q prefers American Idol to American Government.

4. Alberto Gonzales, mob lawyer
pure and simple

Any DEM espousing the shit that comes from Gonzales would probably be disbarred. Possibly committed.
