A Tall Texas Legend Passes. |
|
Senator Lloyd Bentsen passed away today, Tuesday, May 23, 2006. He spent many years in service to his country. In 1970, he beat Senator Ralph Yarbrough in the Democratic Primary, and went on to edge out George H.W. Bush in the general election, to become Texas' junior Senator.
He was a giant, in every sense of the word, not only in Texas politics, but in Texas lore. He had a personality as big as a Texas Hill Country sky, and more compassion than any pol you can find today.
In 1989, he graciously sent a letter of congratulations to my father, for his 70th birthday. Daddy was so proud of that letter, and it came just 5 months before he passed away. Today, Daddy can meet and thank the good Senator for it.
Senator Bentsen was also Michael Dukakis' running mate against GHWB in 1988, where he famously told Bush's running mate, Senator Dan Quayle, during the Vice-Presidential debate, after Quayle claimed to be the same age as JFK when he sought the presidency, "I knew Jack Kennedy; Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine; you Senator are NO JACK KENNEDY". To which he was met with a standing ovation.
The world has lost a friend. The country lost a great leader. And Texas lost a REAL Texas Icon!!

He was a great Texan in the order of Sam Houston and LBJ. He will be missed.

4. He was a great example of how to beat R's: Attack, attack, attack! |
|
He was merciless in attacking G H W Bush in their US Senate race. Today's Dem.s in the Senate could only wish they had similar backbone.

Senator Bentsen was a great man. He was also a graduate of my high school in the Rio Grande Valley.
