Looking for the big (D) on the ballot: big D brand identity
What do non-wonk/brand identity Democrats want in exchange for their votes in November?

Why shouldn't they be as demanding as say, Costco or AFSCME?

I guess I'm asking for a Democratic IDENTITY.

There's an awful lot of people (like I used to be) who trusted that the D was a "brand" I could reasonably (as in, having tangible reason) believe would represent me.

It wasn't just that I couldn't "buy" the R--I couldn't trust it. I was raised a yella-dawg, but it was more than that. I knew by choosing "D," I was doint the best I could for myself--and today, for my family.

Simply put, how do we sell the brand to our fixed market and reach some new ones?

1. Ask Richard Viguerie
That wasn't a serious suggestion.

But it is, in fact, a marketing issue. Our brand has been badly tarnished, both at our own hands and at the hand sof the competition.

They demoniszed the word 'liberal', long associated with, and by some seen as synonymous, with 'Democrat'.

We blew it too .... and I chose that word intentionally. For all Clinton's good, that blow job hurt us enormously. I'm not offended by it. You're probably not, either. But many were. And that hurt the party's brand in that it was easy to understand and it was emblematic of all us 'old hippies who smoke dope'.

Anyway, you get the idea.

Yeah, our brand needs serious help.

2. It seems trite, but as a young yella-dawg, I can draw a comparison
between Cadillac and Honda--just an innate difference I didn't have to even think about--I just KNEW.

Republican Party=Cadillac: Staid, "classy," uninspired, clumsy and ready to fail you at a moment's notice.

Honda=Democratic: Economy of design, innovative, ergonomic, quick, adaptable, responsive.

It isn't brilliant, but you get the idea.

Of course, with the Theo/NeoCon takeover of the GOP, all bets are kinna off for their faithful too--it's just they don't see it as clearly.

3. I got one for ya ......
.... and I'm serious about this .....

What if we spent a shitload of money on a barnding campaign on teevee? Not for any candidate, but for the party? Really clever shit. Like that Geico gekko or some such. or edgy, like the new VW airbag commercials ..... something groundbreaking and 'grab ya'. No cheesy flags and red white and blue, but with a solid patriotic undercurrent.

No mud slinging. No scare 'em tactics. just good old solid American Values ... the stuff **we** believe in.

4. Quite some time ago I proposed in the Dem Party forum,an "I am a Democrat"
Edited on Wed May-24-06 08:21 AM by blondeatlast
campaign.

Jusdt real Democrats talking about why they are Democrats. It was well-received there, but that forum gets precious little attention.

You know, like:

"I'm Blondeatlast, and I'm a Democrat. I'm a dyed blonde who wears 4 inch heels to dinner and mascara to the mall. I vote Democratic because my son (cut to him embarrasedly giving mom a hug) deserves to feel secure knowing that a good life in America awaits him if he puts forth the effort.

Democrats look at children as our best hope, not our personal meal ticket.

Democrats aren't spending our children's inheritance, like the Republicans. Do you know my NINE YEAR OLD son owes the government nearly $30,000 in taxes--right now?

Is this soccer mom scared? You betcha. I'm scared of my son being educated in woefully underfunded schools, not having even the barest essential health care.

Worrying about skinny men in sandals? That's for wussies!

I'm Blondeatlast, and my 4" heels have kicked Republican ass since 1980. And I'm a proud yella-dawg Democrat."

Yep--Great minds think alike. If only we had the dinero... (sigh)

5. We ought to get free air time and run them as PSAs
God knows they'd be the ONLY public service on teevee. :)
