Wis. Governor Signs Abstinence Bill

http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/94-05232006-660718.html

Sex education teachers must present abstinence as the preferred behavior for unmarried people under a bill signed Tuesday by Gov. Jim Doyle.

The legislation means teachers must emphasize that refraining from sex before marriage is the most effective way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. A spokesman for the governor, a Democrat, said most Wisconsin school districts already take that approach.

"The governor thinks that abstinence should be an important part of the message that kids hear from adults as part of their classes," spokesman Dan Leistikow said.

Republican Sen. Mary Lazich, a bill's sponsor, said sex education teachers can still teach about birth control, but must emphasize that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method to avoid health risks.

Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, called the bill, which takes effect July 1, shortsighted.

10. He used to give Tommy Thompson fits ...
... Doyle was AG for a LONNNNNG time and was King Tommy's nemesis.

I saw this story posted elsewhere this morning and the only thing I can think of is that he's trying to head off an all out 'You're a Hippie Liberal' attack from the GOP Governor nominee, (Senator) Mark Green - intolerant Rethuglican extraordinaire.

5. I went to a private Catholic girls high school. This 'method'
doesn't work. And those frustrated old hens pushed it down our throats backed with hellfire and brimstone.

7. Abstinence from what?
Vaginal sex only? If that is the proposal, that certainly is not a 100% effective method to avoid health risks. Hormones will rage and be sated with oral and anal sex and the health risks will skyrocket while participants remain "abstinent."

"Refraining from sex before marriage" I guess I'm just old and dumb but I need more specificity with that statement.

8. I thought that they were bringing prohibition back.
Looks like another "noble experiment" that won't work.

Permission to have sex, sir?
King's deer?
Virgins deflowered by the village headman?

I say, cut out the middle man. Do what comes naturally.

9. While abstinence technically is the only 100% effective disease-prevention
method, and one of the few 100% effective pregnancy-prevention methods (hysterectomy is the only other one I can think of), and I don't mind it if kids are taught that ...and while I am glad that this bill is not abstinence ONLY...

I do NOT want schools teaching my hypothetical children that abstinence-before-marriage is the "preferred behavior."

No, it's not. At least not for the, what, 90 percent of people who have engaged in consentual pre-marital sex.

I am not married. I do live with a partner in a committed relationship. Once his daughter is old enough to put two and two together, even if we are married by then, she will realize that her daddy did what her teacher told her not to. (If she turns out to be gay, she'll find out her daddy did something her teacher told her she could never do, by virtue of the fact she couldn't marry.)

I shudder to think how children of parents who never married process this information -- that if sex before marriage is morally wrong, somehow they're mistakes.

11. "Preferred behavior"? Says who? The gov't is handing down moral
judgments by writ? Legislating morality? I don't think so, asshole.

12. "...abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method ...." Well, only
if in fact the students abstain. Therein lies the rub.
