I am sick of our Dem leaders dancing around and retreating from the "I" word; that word, of course being impeachment. I am not, nor do I ever want to be a political strategist. But I am, first and foremost an American. And, as such, I demand that we have an open and honest government. I demand that our leaders act responsibly and above reproach. I demand that our president upholds the constitution, acts in good faith and has the best interests of the country at heart in regard to the duties he performs as president. It is of utmost importance for our political leaders to be held to a higher standard of behavior than the rest of us, simply because they are in positions of power. They are afforded trust by us, and when that trust is broken by illegal behavior it becomes the duty of the rest of our leaders, no matter which party they are from to investigate, and prosecute if circumstances call for such action.
Never, in the history of our country has there been more reasons to investigate and prosecute a sitting president as there is now. The list of transgressions by Bush and many members of this administration is a long one. We here at DU know them well. Several of these transgressions, I believe are impeachable offenses. What a sad state of affairs it is, when we have what is currently taking place. Republican leaders right now are in three modes; denial, retreat, and pre-emptive posturing.
Many Republicans are in denial. They have closed their eyes to the many messes their administration is responsible for, while using the mantra, "Things have changed. We are in a time of war." What a pitiful and all-encompassing excuse to allow for excesses of behavior and outright illegal actions by this administration. Such republicans have completely abdicated their responsibilities as leaders.
Many republicans are in a retreat mode. They know all too well that Bush and his cronies have done many bad things, from systematically dismantling our democracy to illegally starting a war, to illegegally spying on millions of Americans. These republicans cannot run away from the failures of this administration fast enough. But, no matter how long they hold their noses, they will still smell the stench of complicity, of being a willing participant in the rubber-stamping approval of this administration's actions. All of their pretending to have not been a part of these fatefull las five years are not going to fool the electorate this time around.
And the last group of Republicans are busy trying to head the voters off at the pass. They are the leaders weho are shouting to their constituents, " Hey, beware! Don't you know if the democrats gain control of congress, the first thing they will do is impeach the president? We can't be having that! Rally 'round the flag, boys and girls. Stick with us. We can't let those damned dirty liberals have their way!"
To all three groups of our Republican leaders I will simply say this; I was not born a democrat. I became one of choice. But I was born an American, and that superceeds everything. Make no mistake. If a democrat was in office right now, pulling the things that George Bush is pulling, I would not only be screaming for their impeachment, but I would be screaming louder, because I would feel more of a betrayal to my party.
No one likes to admit that the person they supported for president is a crook, a liar and a thief, but it is UN-AMERICAN to ignore their actions, to apologize or run away from their actions, or to spin or cover-up those actions which cry out for investigation and subsequent prosecution.
I wish the democrats had more guts right now and would just tell the American people outright, "Hell yes, when we take back the congress we are going to impeach Bush, for to do no less would be abdicating our responsibilities as Americans, who demand that our leaders defend, obey and protect the constitution of the United States.
It will take some measure of courage for Republican leaders to come to this realization. Once upon a time, a few decades ago, Barry Goldwater and a few other republican leaders had that courage to stand up to abuse of power against the leader of their own party. Those republicans were real Americans. Since then, I fear, the bar has been lowered to such an acceptable level of bad behavior, that I do not see any real Americans standing up today. Republicans, and some democrats too, can wrap themselves up in the flag all they want to, but until they root out the corrupt individuals that have perverted our constitution, wreaked havoc in the world and stifled our freedoms, the are anything but American.
