Hang your flag upside down from Noon-1PM on Memorial Day
I say we start a movement...I plan on doing it...then again, my neighborhood still has Kerry/Edwards stickers on their cars and Bring The Troops Home/Impeach signs on their lawns.

Anyone else game? Send a photo to me and I'll post it online sans the address (winkie winkie to NSA...)

4. Please don't disrespect the dead
Many people have lost loved ones in other wars that would be highly offended.

I get your point, but I think that would go beyond the line of a righteous protest.

6. Flying the flag upside down is a symbol of "distress," not disrespect
The idea is to say, "Our country is in distress and needs help."

It's not like we're burning it or anything.

9. I know what a upside down flag means. Doh..............but
Edited on Fri May-26-06 08:20 PM by Poppyseedman
If you fly your flag upside down just for one day for only one hour on Memorial Day, like the poster wants to, it will seem like a protest rather than a statement.

Protesting the ones who give it all for their country seems disrespectful, even if you believe they died in vain.

12. So, maybe what we want then...
is to fly the flag uspide down every day except Memorial Day!

Then, on Memorial Day, we should all burn the Rebel Flag instead.

17. It would be for an hour
I see your point, but I think the Constitution deserves to be seen as under distress...which is my point.

The fact is that so many have died and would be ashamed and disgusted at what our government has done to attempt to destroy the very fabric of our democracy...and so many Americans are willing to stand silent while it all happens.

5. That is a great idea. I just noticed that you live in Madison...
When I was in college, we partied with some girls from Madison on Spring Break in Daytona Beach. Those girls were wild and man, could they drink!

I liked those Wisconsin girls so much that I married a girl from OshKosh!

Certainly you understand what my intention and yours is. Indeed, a vet who saw a flag flying upside down would probably give a thumbs up too...knowing the intention.

Police Raid "Upside Down Flag House"
By Matthew Rothschild
June 26, 2004

Last semester, a house in Tucson where several anarchist students from the University of Arizona lived became know as the upside down flag house.

And not without reason.

"They draped large flags, five or six feet wide, upside down from the roof of the house," says Jeff Davis, who says he is good friends with the people who used to live there. On May 28, the police descended on the house with as many as twenty squad cars and a helicopter, Davis says. They arrested seven people there.

The police said they were there because a band was playing on the roof near midnight. "I feel they were waiting for an opportunity to bust the house," says Davis. "There were two neighbors talking to the police, and I talked to them, and they said, 'The police told us you had it coming because you had upside down flags on your house.' "

Walt Staton was also at the house that night. "I've been to a lot of parties in Tucson, and I've never, ever seen so many cops show up," says Staton, who recently graduated from the University of Arizona. "They just wanted to come to harass us. A lot of them were just back from Iraq, and the upside down flags really upset them. I heard one say, 'Well, there are the upside down flags.' It was a personal thing for a lot of them."

The upside down flag is a "symbol of distress," says Staton. "The whole nation is in distress, the whole world is in distress, because of the way the U.S. operates. It was the one symbol we had; we expected people to be upset."

But he didn't expect arrests.

The seven people arrested "were charged with disorderly conduct, and two were charged with holding an unruly gathering, and one of them got a possession of marijuana charge," says attorney Paul Gattone, who is representing all seven.

"These are young activists who are very aware of their rights and asserted their rights in an appropriate manner," Gattone says. "It's unfortunate that the police will use these unfounded charges as a cover for their disagreements with people's political beliefs. But it's part of a disturbing trend. The police are not supposed to be instruments of political repression, but they have taken on that role with great zeal."

The Tucson city attorney refused to comment on this case.

18. I can't do that
Of all the days to send a message, this, in my mind, isn't one of them.

I'm not saying what anyone lese should do, but for me, I'd prefer to keep the day tradtional. Its not a day about now. Its a day about then.

"A Constitution in Tatters,
A Country in Distress** or,

Why we fly our flag upside down

written by Michelle Konieczny

We believe the citizens of the United States and others who live in our country are in grave danger of being denied the inalienable rights that have made this country the best and brightest hope for the World for over 200 years. Many of our Rights have already been stolen and abuses have been visited upon U.S. Citizens, and other people across the world, at the hands of government agents acting in the name of our Nation.

We have a good system of government, but it needs to perform only its lawful functions and to be bound once again by the restraints of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We feel it is every U.S. Citizen's duty to protect and defend these important documents and ensure the guidelines it dictates are followed. There exist those currently in the U.S. government who would ignore its demands of restraint, fair and just legislation, strict division and limited scope of governmental powers. We feel it is every American's duty to elect and support those who take their oath to defend and protect the Constitution seriously and will stand by their promises.

The International Charter of Flag Etiquette states that a flag may be flown upside down in cases of extreme distress. We fly our flag upside down to call out to fellow Americans, and to make them aware that our country is in distress. We seek to inform our fellow citizens and spread word of the changes that are needed to ensure our Liberty."

23. No. Every **other** day is about now
Memorial Day is about then. It is about the ones who went before us but are no longer with us. It is about my Dad, my uncles, my high school buddy who didn't make it to now ..... or even to college.

Memorial Day, for me, is about them ..... and then.

I understand your sentiment and I respect it.

But for me ..... it is about then.

26. There are better ways to protest. Hang "Impeach Bush" signs instead
I've got one hanging inside my window, which is about 8 feet away from my flag which I'm proud to say is hanging right side up for the Memorial Day weekend.

I feel doubly patriotic for doing it this way.

28. Thats a Much Better Idea ..
Hanging a flag upside down? Talk about sending mixed messages ....
I see an upside down flag every time I see a Bush/Cheney sticker.
I don't think thats the message these guys are trying to send.
Personally I don't own a flag.
