If you like reading jingoistic spam...
Another proud bit of Americana forwarded by my neighbor: http://vastleft.blogspot.com/2006/05/land-of-shut-up-and-home-of-leave.html

The creepy thing is how gleefully people forward these things around with "Hell, yeah!" comments.

The moral of this one is pretty basic: love my star-spangled-Jesus version of America or shut up and get the hell out.

God bless our freedom!

1. Im suprised right wingers leave in the "liberty and justice for all" line
I'd think they'd rather edit that out.

3. Good point
Billmon has a suggested alternate Pledge: http://billmon.org/archives/001976.html

Focuses on the country club Repubs, though, instead of the blue-collar variety.

8. Francis Belamy wanted to add "Equality" to the pledge, but
his boss didn't want equality for women or blacks.

5. The writer of the Pledge was a socialist.
The "under God" phrase was added during the McCarthy Hearings when it was dangerous to be a supporter of the 1st Amendment. The Knights of Columbus had congress make it a part of the pledge. They knew nobody would vote against it because they would have been branded "anti God", a code word for Communist.

6. I knew he was a minister that didn't want to include "God" in it
That he was a Socialist I hadn't heard.

I love the way people act like taking it out of the pledge makes you an America-hating freak, since we should just leave the pledge alone. I've never heard one of these guys be troubled by the fact that adding "under God" was an act of tampering.

It's always "leave well enough alone," just like the Florida vote counts, as long as the status quo is the way they want it. But if it's something they don't like, such as filibusters, marriage laws, the FISA law, etc., etc., they're only to happy to be the agents of change.

http://history.vineyard.net/pledge.htm

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

* "to" added later.
