Democrats again in congressional fray in South Carolina

By BRUCE SMITH
Saturday, May 27, 2006

CHARLESTON, S.C. - There is something a little bit different in the congressional campaigns this election year in South Carolina _ Democrats.

It's the first election since 1988 in which a Democrat will be on the ballot in all six of the state's congressional districts, something political observers say has to do with a general disenchantment with the way things are going in Washington.

Snip...

"I do believe it has everything to do with that's going on nationally," McIntosh said. "People are tired of the corruption and the inability to get anything done up there."

Randy Maatta, one of three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination in the 1st District, echoes what many of his fellow Democrats are thinking.

"The country is just heading in the wrong direction," he said. "We're bogged down in a war in Iraq with no end in sight. We're facing deficits as far as the eye can see."

5. My how the mighty
monkey has fallen..

"Dave Woodard, a Clemson University political scientist, said voter discontent with what's happening in Washington likely will mean incumbent Republicans will separate themselves a bit from President Bush.

"I look for almost every Republican incumbent to put some distance between themselves and the president on some of these national issues," he said."

Not even the media has been able to save the mentally challenged one.

6. And **every** Repub incumbent is a Bush Republican, rubber stamp inked and
ready to do his bidding.

Our job is to make that fact known.

7. Newt Gingrich was correct about something vital..
when he first entered politics, Republicans ran candidates in just a few of Georgia's Congressional districts. As a result Democrats in that state were always able to keep Republicans like Newt, Mattingly, and Bo Callaway on the defensive. Republicans were never able to take the offensive because most Democrats considered the campaign over after the primary, then all party resources could be concentrated on destroying any Republican who dared to run. If Republicans had no candidates on the ballot for Congress, then why waste time voting for candidates running for Governor or even President? It's a self-destructive cycle, why vote if nobody you like is on the ballot..why run if the people who like your ideas never plan to vote?

Newt changed this, he made sure that Republicans ran candidates in every district..regardless of the odds against them. In 1988..Republicans only held one of Georgia's 10 Congressional districts, 1992..they held 4 of Georgia's 11 districts, and in 1994 they held all but three. Now the Congressional districts in Georgia are evenly split, but Republicans have the upper hand. This can change, because Democrats are running candidates in every district..Republicans have left John Lewis without any opposition. All we need is to win one more seat, and Democrats will again control most of the districts in Georgia! Democrats can't afford to allow any Republicans to win without opposition, because this only puts the burden on Democrats who are willing to go against the odds!
