Did Andy Rooney just dis American religions?
Edited on Sun May-28-06 07:38 PM by Bluesplayer
On 60 minutes, Andy Rooney was just talking about Memorial Day. He said that as a veteran, he doesn't remember his friends who died in WWII any more on Memorial Day than on any other day. (He thinks of them everyday.)

He suggested that instead of memorializing those already dead, that we should do something about saving those who will die in wars in the future... "if we don't find some new way - some new religion maybe - that takes war out of our lives. That would be a Memorial Day worth celebrating."

He seems to be saying that the current religions (that assign our "values, maybe) are promoting war by virtue of the politicians that they support...

1. I don't think he was dissing American religions, but rather
saying that since many people are swayed by their religious beliefs, maybe a NEW ONE that disavowed all war would make this planet a much better place. I have to admit, when he said ti, I verbally answered "YES, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, Andy!"

2. There are several.
Including the Society of Friends and the Church Of The Brethren which already disavow all war.

4. If it comes down to...
Christianity, Islam and a true "Religion of Peace" or pacifism, There would only be Christianity and Islam left in the world. All pacifists are is wheat to be mowed down by Christianity or Islam. If I had to make a bet, I would say Islam would more than likely be the ones running the threshers.

3. I do think he is an atheist. I seem to remember Don Imus asking him.
But I to feel that lots of death and war can be attributed to, "My faith is better than your faith" mentality. Next to oil, the whole crusade picture fits well in crazy Georges war. "Radical Islamic extremists." seems like we could say the same about Born Again Christians who fully believe the Bible is literally true.... extremists!
