A Memorial Day Message from Wes Clark
Edited on Mon May-29-06 09:08 AM by Time for change
Dear XXX,

Last week, I returned to Kosovo for the first time since I retired from military service.

For me, this trip was very personal. In 1999, I commanded the NATO forces that stopped the genocide against ethnic Albanians by Slobodan Milosevic and his Serbian forces. Now Kosovo is on the road to independence, a nation that respects the rights of all its citizens. It was so moving to return to Kosovo and meet thousands of people who had been liberated from Serbian oppression, hearing their stories and learning about their experiences. You can see some of the photos from my recent trip here.

This was an example of how we CAN do it right: diplomacy first, strong leadership, working with others, and using force only as a last resort. We had a plan for what to do after the operation before we began air strikes.

During the Kosovo War, we were fortunate not to lose a single American soldier in combat -- but in most military operations we aren't so lucky. We owe the men and women of our armed forces our deepest gratitude for their willingness to serve in harm's way, whether it's protecting Americans during natural disasters here at home or defending our country and defending freedom abroad.

Today across America, we take time to remember those who have given their lives defending the cause of freedom throughout our nation's history. This year, as our soldiers are serving with honor in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in the Balkans, and around the world, I hope you will join me in observing Memorial Day, whether it's attending an event in your local community or simply taking a personal moment to remember the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to honor their families.

As this Memorial Day passes, I urge our leaders and all Americans to fully honor our troops and respect their sacrifice. That means ensuring our men and women in uniform are properly equipped, trained, and organized.

That means providing our troops and veterans the medical care they deserve, and providing Reservists and National Guard members health insurance for themselves and their families through TRICARE, the military's health care system, just as the active force does.

That means eliminating the "widow's tax," which penalizes the survivors of those killed in combat by reducing the benefits to which they are entitled.

Finally, as we embark upon our fourth year in Iraq and as the Bush Administration continues its heated rhetoric toward Iran, we owe it to all of our brave service men and women, their families, and to all Americans, to recommit to the principle that military force should only be used as the very, very last resort. Only when all diplomatic, economic, and political options have been exhausted should we send our military forces into battle.

After all, the greatest way to honor our men and women in uniform is to require their sacrifice the least.

Gert and I send you our very best wishes for a safe and happy Memorial Day.

Sincerely,

Wes Clark

9. Yes, I believe he would
And we would win back the respect of the world pretty quick -- if we don't do too much damage before then.

2. A true statesman...
What's he saying here? If you ask me, he's saying Clinton and I knew how to do this the RIGHT way.

3. My President!
Grunt.

Imagine, diplomacy, statesmanship, allies....wow. What a frickin' moonbat! I wonder why he hates America so much?

I really and truly hope he runs again in 2008. I'd vote for him all over again.

Psst....check for the "ClarkCast" on iTunes for more of the same...I listen to it every week, and it's quite insightful and articulate..quite a difference from the chimp's weekly radio address, which I also listen to regularly.

12. I was going to vote for him, but didn't get a chance in 04
because hw was out of the race by the time the primaries came to MD.

But one of the things that I most admired about him -- and this may sound like a small point to a lot of people -- is that I never once heard him say anything unkind or harshly critical (or critical at all really) about another Democrat running in the primaries against him. I think that is so important because when Democrats tear each other down in the primaries it just opens the door for some piece of crap to get elected (or selected, as the case may be) President. But I never heard Clark do that once, and that is very unusual, and to me it means a strong committment to put the fortunes of our Party and our country ahead of his own personal ambitions.

4. Something we can do:
ICE posted this plea on the Clarkblog. I haven't checked DU, but maybe it is here too:

On this memorial day, I can't think of anything more appropriate than to throw out a challenge to the Clark Community to help our soldiers. I'm asking all of us to make a contribution, no matter how small, to a very worthy cause, Operation Helmet. It was founded in 2003 by Dr Robert Meaders, whose grandson is a marine in Iraq.

OPERATION HELMET provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future.

Operation Helmet

It seems just crazy-making to me that with $450 billion Rummy can't spare some change to pay for these upgrades. But bitching, doesn't change reality. So, while I can't come up with the total amount, I can contribute. A $25 donation is on the way. Please join me.

6. I needed to hear that message today.
The world news, as usual, is horrible this morning. All the wasted lives, maimed bodies, and destruction as a result of Bush's NEEDLESS WAR of choice.

I needed to hear the calm brave voice of reason and experience. It is easy at times to feel hopeless.

Wes Clark has a good heart.

7. General Clark was perhaps the biggest advocate in the Clinton
Administration, along with Madeleine Albright, to intervene in Kosovo in order to prevent the developing genocide there.

But he was against the strategy of not using ground troops because, as described in Samantha Power's "A Problem from Hell -- America and the Age of Genocide", "Clark argued that it impeded NATO's effectiveness and endangered the lives of Serbian and Albanian civilians".

8. Audio of Clark talking about the torture and abuse of our prisoners of war
Clark explains why the torture and abuse of our prisoners of war is "un-American" and counter-productive.

He says that the only time when we've won friends in the world when we set an example with our values, NOT by using our military power to intimidate:

14. Frankly, if the Democratic poo-bahs turn their back on Clark
I'm going to move to Little Rock so I can breathe the same air he breathes (when he's there) and try to hold on to my sanity.

I find it so discouraging to watch the rest of the mob bullshitting and playing "slice and dice" as if we in "normal" times....
