CA gubernatorial primary: Angelides Attack Ad Points Back at Him
LAT: Angelides Attack Ad Points Back at Him
He links campaign rival Westly to a `corrupt' money man he himself apparently solicited.
By Dan Morain and Evan Halper, Times Staff Writers
May 29, 2006

SACRAMENTO — A TV ad by state Treasurer Phil Angelides excoriates Controller Steve Westly for raising campaign cash from "a corrupt Chicago businessman" — yet Angelides apparently sought fundraising aid from the same man.

Angelides, who is competing with Westly for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and his aides placed repeated calls to Chicago attorney Joseph Cari in early 2005 in search of fundraising help, a Cari spokesman told The Times. Cari had raised money for a number of nationally prominent Democrats, including former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware.

Angelides' calls, placed over a number of weeks, amounted to "stalking," said the spokesman, Ken Jakubowski, a Chicago attorney and longtime Cari associate who called the treasurer's TV ad "misleading."

Cari, who awaits sentencing on criminal charges in an Illinois pension fund scandal, declined to comment.

Angelides and Westly, locked in a tight race, have been trading bitter charges in a barrage of increasingly strident commercials as the June 6 primary approaches....

1. These guys need to spend more time attacking Arnold
and less time on eachother. I hope Westly wins the nomination, and everything seems to indicate he would do better against Arnold, but either of them would be a great improvement for California.

2. The attack ads on TeeVee have been relentless....
Probably 80% of the ads I see on my TeeVee are from one of these two guys.

I honestly don't know which one to vote for in the primary. Must do a little research I guess.

3. Both are fine by me. Polls show that Westly is stronger against Arnold
than Angelides is. I was on the fence about which one, but if Westly is going to do better in the general election, I'd prefer to have him win the nomination.

4. At least Angelides is a Democrat.
Westly has been running on a Republican platform.

The state Democratic Party knew what it was doing when it endorsed Angelides.

5. I'm for Angelides
Westly runs on Republican talking points. I was sort of warming up to Westly until every commercial was from him and they were all attacking a DEMOCRAT.

6. Nobody has clean hands
They're both attacking each other from the commercials I've been seeing and the Times articles have been hit pieces on both candidates.

7. If the MEDIA didn't spend so much time doing spin like this
piece of crap, and simply reported on the facts and on the candidates' experiences and record, we'd all be a lot better off and better positioned to identify the better candidate.

But the media has no interest in doing their JOB - reporting on information we need to made an informed decision - no, they are much more interested in this kind of gotcha journalism about whether or not someone from Angelides' campaign called this person. We who have done phone-banking for campaigns know very well that lists are enormous and the wrong people may end up on those lists.

I have not yet seen one article anywhere in any newspaper that provided a breakdown of the candidates' campaign promises and their plans for improving California. I have not seen much about their histories. You have to search and search for stuff like the fact that Westly isn't exactly a teacher in the sense that most people understand the word. No, he spent five years doing a part-time lecturing position at a Harvard MBA program. Not bad,but that's not the same thing as being a poorly paid teacher in a public high school, which is probably what a lot of people thought Westly was when they heard he was a teacher.

You'll also have to search and search to find out that Angelides doesn't have consultants to tell him what to say or otherwise "package" him. I like that a lot and I think it speaks well of Angelides.

The corporate media is intent on selling their candidate, Westly, because they know Angelides has promised to increase taxes on the wealthiest Californians and make corporations pay more.
