The perception of impending doom...
lays heavily on the minds of many Americans, mostly from the left side. They worry that it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. They do not believe the economy is going great. They do not believe the war is going great. They do not feel they are safe or are protected by this government. They do not feel that their freedoms are being protected.

Regardless of what the Republicans say, many Americans see deficits as far as the eye can see. They know from experience, there is no such thing as a free lunch. It is not possible to borrow money to give huge taxcuts to the wealthiest without reaping some dire consequences. For the life of them, they cannot bring themselves to "feel good" and rejoice with the hallucinating Republicans.

They see the war in Iraq as a disaster. Since day one of the war, they know it was all based on lies. It is difficult to legitimize any endeavor if it is based on lies. Also, they do not feel they are any safer - in fact, they feel less safe.

They see a Party, the Republicans, that are using fear as a political weapon in the war on terror. They see spying and eavesdropping on tens of millions of Americans and nobody seems to care. They truly fear the direction we are headed. Perhaps it is all self-fulfilling, but many Americans are waiting for the other shoe to drop. They have seen too many lies and too much deception to ever trust the Republicans now in power.

1. oh, so right-... and
being a person who struggles with PTSD, the most frightening thing for me, is to hear other people voice their overwhelming sense of 'empending doom', when all along, i could somewhat 'reassure' myself, that it was my 'disorderd thoughts'- something 'wrong with me'-....

I've felt this coming for so long- it's the anticipation.... the constant 'is this it?' the eternal hypervigilance..... that really wears you down.... and the drugs don't make it go away-

Is it wrong to just want it to come to a head at last?

God, this world is so messed up-

Peace- that is all i seek- for everyone-
peace.

3. I live in Texas,
And i live in one of the few blue areas, but i don't hear that from people here. I try my damnedest to inform the people i know, and even the ones i don't that this administration is destroying our country but it appears to be falling on deft ears.

I just posted a similar post here at DU, and i can't figure out how to get it across to these people that everything is not rosy. I suppose they will have to be hit in the pocket book, that just might get their attention.

Peace!

8. I can't tell,
but i don't think so. The problem is i can't seem to get them to discuss it, it appears that they are walking around with their fingers in their ears saying LALALALALALALLA

It's like they don't want to admit that we have problems, it's the strangest thing i've ever encountered. I'm not talking about wealthy people here, these are working class educated folks and i know they're feeling the pinch of the Bu$h economy but it appears they are in denial.

And now most of these folks have turned to the church, the last refuge for a scoundrel. I believe that that just compounds the issues we have in this country, and it also makes it harder to get through to them.

These are people i've known way before Bu$h, and i really don't want to throw my hands up and walk away. But it seems the Right Wing have a hold on some, and it's iron clad.

I think they believe it will all get better or we really don't have any problems, of course thats what they're being told by radio and television and the preacher. And the ones that believe the preacher, also believe it's not suppose to get better it's all suppose to come to and end.

Peace!

10. Eventually the wheels will come off the bus.
Unfortunately we will be plunging off a cliff at the same time. The misbelievers will have a startling moment of cognitive dissonance. Unfortunately they are being primed to accept an openly brutal regime to lead us through the coming disaster.

4. Depressing with a capitol "D"....
Depending on which minute you catch me, I feel the same way or hopelessly optimisitic... I wonder if my gut reactions are so totally screwed up. A perceptional "seesaw" in a really far-out playground. One minute I'm ready to smoke my cigarettes again, "why the hell not?" mood... and the next minute, I'm ready to walk the boardwalk and enjoy the nature and beauty of this planet... (while I can).

It's all a matter of perception whether or not you can get through it... the result would be quite different though, if you acted one way or another.

If I smoke, I can't walk (breathe well).. on the boardwalk to enjoy the nature. If I don't smoke I can enjoy what is here, and maybe even have more energy from the positiveness of it, to work to preserve the earth.. (join a meaningful campaign... something like "Fight against Global warming comes to mind").

The results of my actions on my moods and my perceptions do matter. So does everyone elses, and if we as a collective, just move forward with a positive view... we have a fighting chance... the ONLY fighting chance, far as I can see. So do our children and future grandchildren, etc.

I chose the boardwalk.

Less depressing/greatest chance for positive change.

6. In my job I deal mostly with RW members of the amerikan ruling class
Edited on Mon May-29-06 01:57 PM by greyhound1966
all day, every day. I am hearing, on a daily basis, that they are making preparations to live in, or make a last minute escape to, other countries. South and Central America are the most popular destinations.

The rulers are very much aware of what is coming and are dreading the day the sheeple wake up and realize that are heading for slaughterhouse.

Edit to add: It isn't all RW rulers either, I've been told by many of my left leaning clients (few though they are) that they have no faith that the Democrats are going to make any significant changes and are making the same preparations.

9. W is a drag
I'm not disagreeing with you I just think that the big picture is that the Clinton years seem like the roaring twenties compared to now. W&Co. would blame 9/11 of course by generally there is no joy no fun it is like there is a dark cloud following everyone around. Oh sure there is still fun to be had but the days of everyone looking toward tomorrow (and I don't mean that song) and the USA being happy and good and the light are over and everyone feels it.

11. No hope there......
War has never been the answer or the path to a good life for all people.
It's always destruction of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I'd rather think

Dream of what can be
and then love it into being!

12. Afraid of Helos now...
I'm a huge aviation freak....I'm always listening in to the tower and I always look up whenever something flies by...

What does this have to do with impending doom?

It's the helos. On more than one ocassion, military helicopters, or state police helicopters have been hovering around my house. On one ocassion, a Blackhawk was circling so low, I could see the troops inside watching me on the lawn looking up at them. As soon as they realized what I was doing, the hightailed it out of there.

On another ocassion, the state police helo was hovering a fair distance away, but it was pointed my way with his big camera...as soon as I got out my binocs and looked at him to see what he was doing...he spun around and left.

Maybe it's innocent....maybe I am under surveillance....but the fact remains that until the Bush 'presidency', I would have said "oh, that's weird", and paid it no further attention. With all the paranoia and domestic spying, and undoubtedly lists of "enemies of the state"...I often wonder if they are looking for me and just waiting for the right moment to pick me up.

And all because I dare to speak up.

13. That gnawing in the pit of my stomach is impending doom...
Not only for our country, but for the world in general as I fully believe global warming will have a much, much worse affect on humanity and the biodiversity of this planet than most comprehend...we are only beginning to see its affects.

What hasn't helped this feeling with regards to where we are heading here in America is that I've had a few people say to me recently (without any prodding on my part) that we will be living in a have and have-not society in the near future, and those in the middle class had better be smart and save their pennies while they can. In other words, we are seeing the beginning of the end of the middle class in this country.

That gnawing suddenly becomes a full-fledged ulcer.

14. Doom? Hell no!
Sure, these guys are fucking up our country (and the world) in the short term, and the road back will be damned difficult, but WE WILL PERSEVERE, of that I have no doubt.

18. I totally agree! Even the die-hard thugs at work are silent lately.
They are finally starting to realize all those "tinfoil hat theories" i.e. lies to war, torture, spying on American citizens, etc. etc. are no longer "tinfoil hat theories." They are REALITY.

Sadly, the first and foremost "tinfoil hat theory," STOLEN ELECTIONS may prevent this nation from ever recovering even if the sheeple are waking up from their kool-aid hangovers!
