YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The Washington state Republican Party has adopted
a resolution calling for an end to the Constitution's guarantee of automatic
citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.
Delegates supporting that platform said their concerns included the cost
to public hospitals and the expense of welfare for the children of indigent
or deported illegal immigrants.

The 14th Amendment says: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States
and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and
of the State wherein they reside."
State Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz called the GOP resolution "a punitive
and inhumane response to the immigration issue America is confronting" and said
it would prove to be an "embarrassment" to Republican candidates.
