The figure being tossed around as the minimum necessary to enter the Democratic Primaries is $50 million dollars. That's why many names will be mentioned, but few will actually be in the top tier of candidates who can actually compete. That is a lot of donors to call.

Seriously, I have no idea, but it's a lot. You need either a lot of rich friends, or be willing to skip the big guys' contributions and go for the grass roots and hope.
