Lieberman to opponent: 'I'm not George Bush'

By SUSAN HAIGH
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WEST HARTFORD, Conn., July 6 — U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman sought to distance himself from the Bush administration during a televised debate with his upstart Democratic primary challenger Thursday, telling him: ''I'm not George Bush.''

Lieberman's opponent, political newcomer Ned Lamont, has gained in statewide polls by accusing Lieberman of straying from his Democratic roots. Just six years after being his party's nominee for the vice presidency, Lieberman has fallen into disfavor among some Democrats for his perceived closeness to President Bush and support for the war in Iraq.

''I know George Bush. I've worked against George Bush. I've even run against George Bush. But Ned, I'm not George Bush,'' Lieberman said during the debate, televised nationally by MSNBC and C-SPAN. ''So why don't you stop running against him and have the courage and honesty to run against me and the facts of my record.''

2. i find that remark insulting on several fronts.
Edited on Thu Jul-06-06 11:03 PM by bullimiami
firstly it is plagerized in form from, i think, ronald reagan. someone correct me if need be.

EDIT my wife corrects me, close but no cigar, rayguns running mate lloyd bentson.
still plagerized, still disingenous, still scripted.

secondly, it is obviously a planned and scripted line, probably written by his 'team'.

it just reinforces what I dont like about him.

Lloyd Bentsen was Michael Dukakis' running mate.

And of course it was scripted. Everything they say in these televised debates is scripted to one degree or another.

But it's actually a bit stupid to have used it. For those aware of its origin, contextually Lieberman just put himself in the place of idiot-boy Quayle, leaving Bush a JFK figure, and Lieberman not rising to that standard. Whoever scripted it needs some more lessons in effective rhetoric. When Bentsen used it, it was genius. Liberman using it in that context is silly.

15. And I couldn't believe he used
the "there you go again" line that Raygoon used so much against Carter in their debates. I just couldn't believe it, among all the other stupid repuke-like shit he pulled in the debate. He should fire his entire campaign advisement team ASAP!

7. Sorry, but I am appalled at your history.
I would suggest that if you are that deficient in historical knowledge, leave the references to others ....
I think Abraham Lincoln said that, or maybe it was his running mate, Jefferson Davis :sarcasm:

11. I was appalled that his debating style and talking points were
all so Republican. I expected him to go negative, and be as whiny as he was, but he also twisted the facts to the point that truth was sujective, and that is a Republican tactic. Plus, he used all their talking points.

If it's possible, I'm even more anti-Lieberman now than I was before the debate.

17. His plan is very similar...
to that of Santorum, using his staff to get signatures to put the Green Party candidate on the ballot in PA. Divide and conquer.
