Lieberman Saved the Submarine Base, Dammit!
Lieberman in his debate against Lamont:
It helped me save the 31,000 jobs at the sub base in New London...
I'm the one who saved the 31,000 jobs at EB and a lot of others...
I think people have to ask themselves, with all that's at stake in the next six years, could Ned Lamont have saved those 31,000 jobs at the submarine base?...
Could he deliver the contracts that will save jobs at E.B.?...

Now here's a quote from CT Governor Rell's Accomplishments:
"Saving the Groton/New London Submarine Base: Governor Rell teamed up with public officials from both political parties and other local leaders from southeastern Connecticut to save the Groton/New London Submarine Base from closure. This collaborative, intense effort saved over 31,000 jobs statewide."
http://www.ct.gov/governorrell/cwp/view.asp?a=1317&Q=285100

and here's a quote from Republican Rep Rob Simmons:
"Simmons said one of his major accomplishments was his work to retain the Groton Submarine Base from closure, which would have resulted in the loss of 31,000 jobs throughout the state."
http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16808974&BRD=1631&PAG=461&dept_id=7931&rfi=6

These Republicans try to paint it as a bipartisan effort, but Lieberman tries to steal all the credit.

1. One thing was crystal clear from that debate
For Joe, it's all about Joe.

2. I'm with you. I have "issues" with Lieberman, but he is still a Dem
and I think he is getting treated badly. IMO, we are treating him just like Rebubs would treat their own who disagree with the majority. I thought our party was fairer and more accepting of differing opinions. I don't agree at all with Lieberman's POV on Iraq and even on a couple of woman's issues, however he is still entitled to vote his conscious and as he believes the people of Connecticut want him to vote. There certainly is nothing wrong with him having a challenger, but it bothers me now that his fellow Dem's appear to be taking sides.

3. Hmmmm, if, as you say,
"There certainly is nothing wrong with him having a challenger..."

then why do you have a problem with

"his fellow Dem's appear to be taking sides."

That is the nature of the beast. People "take sides". That's why he has a "challenger".

Besides I turned off Joe when he conceded 2000 before Al on MTP way back when.

That a very was "un-Democratic Party" move and told me a lot about the man as a politician (and "his conscious").

10. Lieberman has not just supported the Iraq War.
He has supported the privatization of Social Security. He has supported censorship of the media. He has routinely attempted to squash Democratic criticism of Bush. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

11. If he runs against the legitimate party nominee
he's no more a Democrat than Nader is.

4. Yeah, right..
Lieberman singlehandedly saved the Sub Base. Please. This is so pathetic on his part. I live in CT and while he certainly was involved in the effort he was by no means by himself. Now he is trying to take all the credit.

7. Why does the U.S. need a blue water nuclear sub fleet?
Very expensive and very unnecessary. The Russian fleet is sitting rusting in port. Military bases come with a litany of economic and environmental downsides as well.

Why not secure equivalent funding for something worthwhile like high-tech manufacturing or infrastructure improvement projects?

8. We need a blue water sub fleet
Not necessarily nuclear. I was home ported on diesel-electric boats out of Groton during the late '60s cold war when the sub fleet was the strongest military deterrent against the Soviets. Nowadays the threat is from ultra-quiet sophisticated non-nuclear subs that can penetrate our coastal defenses. They originate in the Euro-Asia shipyards and so we have to be on guard from the Chinese Navy, and now that Bush/Cheney has pissed off Putin, we need to be on watch for Cold War II started by BushCo.

12. Bring back the diesels!
I served on the USS Skate (www.ssn578.com) and I have to admit that most of us envied the USS Barbel (www.ussbarbel.com), at the time the only active diesel boat in the fleet (late 70s).

The guys on the Barbel had the best liberty ports (no nuclear reactor, no protests), didn't spend an inhumane time submerged or out on patrol. With a nuclear boat and a full load of supplies, you could submerge and stay down until you were nearly stir-crazy. We won't talk about the "Ladies Night" we'd have after a month or so.....

14. I wasn't aware the Chinese had long-range non-nuclear subs
Are these new Russian subs sold to the Chinese or Chinese-designed, Chinese-built vessels?

13. Are those "real" jobs? created by and for the private sector?
Or our they part of the military industrial complex, supported by Government corporate welfare handouts?

And we wonder why we have the greatest deficit in the history of the United States.
