Bush in Chicago. . .A DISASTER!!!
From the From the Chicago Tribune

-snip-
The Tribune's Rick Pearson then was called upon and seemed to surprise the president when he asked if he were going to re-appoint special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, the very busy U.S. Attorney in Chicago. The president said he hadn't really thought about that, then recovered by saying that the decision would fall to Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales. And though he said he wanted to get to Chicago to experience more of the "real" America, he allowed that he hadn't paid much attention to Fitzgerald's investigations, which have been the subject of extensive coverage in the national media.

Other local reporters asked aggressive questions about national policy; and there was a pointed question about the president's presence at an appearance for Republican gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka. Bush tried to parry the question, not all that gracefully at first, before rallying with the boilerplate about core beliefs that voters have always seemed to respect in him.

So if the communications czars in the White House were hoping for questions about cheesecake or the Cubs, they were roundly disappointed. And if they thought that by taking the president away from the Beltway that somehow he would be bathed in different light, the morning in Chicago proved that wrong.

More from the Trib:

-snip-
A local reporter reminded the president of remarks earlier this year, attributed to a Topinka aide, who had said that given Bush's sinking popularity numbers, the Topinka campaign would like the president to raise money in the governor's race "late at night, in an undisclosed location."

"I'm not offended by what the person said," Bush responded. "I was invited. I gladly came. And I think we're going to have a pretty successful fundraiser for her."
-snip-

From the Sun-Times
-snip-
On local political matters, Bush brushed off a question about whether he was offended by a Topinka aide's remarks to syndicated columnist George Will in April that suggested she was less than enthusiastic about campaigning with Bush.

"We just want him to raise money," the aide was quoted as saying, adding "late at night ... in an undisclosed location."

When a reporter read the quotes to Bush today, he said it was the first he had heard of them.

"I'm not offended," Bush said. "First of all, am I offended that you read the person's remarks to me? No, I'm not offended at you reading that at all. Nor am I offended at what the person said.

"I think it's going to be a pretty successful fund-raiser. And I -- we --- will hold the House and the Senate. And I've spent a lot of time on the road. I like campaigning. And I'm proud she invited me."
-snip-

And even though he wanted to help Topinka, Rod was able to use Bush's words to make Judy look bad:

From the Associated Press
-snip-
The governor said he wants to thank Bush for mentioning Illinois' record in job creation in a speech Friday.

Last month, GOP candidate Judy Baar Topinka questioned the numbers when the governor released figures showing Illinois leading the nation in monthly job growth.

Blagojevich said he wants to thank the president for agreeing with him and disagreeing with Topinka.
-snip-

From WBBM-AM:

-snip-
While President Bush was helping raise funds for Judy Baar Topinka, Governor Blagojevich's political staff tried to tie his opponent to the president who has low approval ratings.

The Blagojevich campaign unveiled an Internet ad linking the two republicans on the issues of gun control, the minimum wage, taxes, the environment and abortion.

Topinka and Bush both oppose raising the minimum wage and reinstating the assault weapons ban. The two support tax cuts and some abortion restrictions such as spousal consent and age limits.

When a reporter read the quotes to Bush today, he said it was the first he had heard of them.

"I'm not offended," Bush said. "First of all, am I offended that you read the person's remarks to me? No, I'm not offended at you reading that at all. Nor am I offended at what the person said.

From that, I'd tell you:
A) Bush was offended the reporter read the remarks to him.
B) Bush was offended that Topinka said that.
C) And oh, it wasn't the first time he'd heard those remarks.

It's always Opposite Day at the Bush Administration.

7. Here's a update
Bush with Hastert went to Cabot Microeletronic's in Aurora IL. and later will be at a fundraiser but on by Cabot. All of Cabot reports brag about their outsouring jobs to other Countries. John Laesch flank by us veterans an others held a news conference in Front of Hastert office telling the people in Hastert district how many American jobs have been sent overseas. Hastert staff hid in the back of the office. Hastert now has been caught in Land deals off the highway bill.Hastert also has been caught in $1000.00 day fishing trips paid for by oil companies right after the energy bill went into law. Hastert son now is being look at about horse abuse. There is a lot more coming if Hastert is force to resign Rove has picked a replacement. John is a navy vet doing it all on his own .DCCC claimed Hastert in a safe district wrong again guys. John has veteran support an we are researching every move Hastert has made. This is huge just think we can bring down the Speaker of the House funny DCCC can not see that the number show Hastert in trouble big time.

8. Hey Monkeyman!
I went to the protest at Cabot (it was wimpy but I don't think anyone knew about it). John spoke briefly and did a small spot with ABC 7 but they haven't run it, maybe at 10:00.:( It was weird that they unloaded all his big black vehicles from those huge helicopters just to drive across parking lots. Must suck to be Bush! Can't go anywhere without a small army to protect Lord Pissypants.

9.  What Was Mayor Daley thinking when he had dinner with Bush?..
It would seem to me there is some federal grant money on the line or perhaps the Republicans have a challenger for his job that he's trying to shake..There is a reason for him sucking up to Bush and I think its a insult to the Democratic party and more........

14. His repeat ion of
"diplomacy takes time" meme all sounded like the whining of a bully who isn't being allowed to punch his way to a solution.

It all sounded like "See what a pain in the ass it is to work peacefully and diplomatically. This is why I prefer sending in the troops."

Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 10:06 AM by chill_wind
His total ineptness, especially with the unpredictable and unscripted has always been remarkablly startling and depressing.

The media could have done country and the world a big favor years ago already by exposing him honestly and candidly all along the way as a man who can't operate convincingly without preselected fealty-oathing crowds and carefully chosen pre-ordained "town hall" scripts.

They chose not to.

That's Stover's Project Vote Smart issue questionaire. He's in favor of reauthorizing "the ban on the sale or transfer of semi-automatic guns, except those used for hunting." His website is also full of very detailed positions on a vast array of issues. www.stoverforcongress.us.

"And I - we - will hold the House and Senate..."

Quite the Freudian slip there. Revealing of where he imagines himself in relation to the Congress and their relationship to him.
