The Thursday Night Fights
<<snip>>
In 2000, he let Dick Cheney walk into the debate as Darth Vader and out as Mister Rogers, and the reason that happened was because Joe Lieberman, at that moment, was a happy guy. He was a dizzy ingénue, happy to have been invited to the dance by that cute Al Gore. He was in no mood to grab the punch bowl and dump it over Cheney’s head.
In 2006, he is furious, stung, indignant, and his inner circle is assuring him he has every right to be. Who is this unqualified man, backed by a rabble of bloggers and activists, to be questioning him? The question he repeated so many times last night, “Who is Ned Lamont?” is a very real question for Lieberman.
A nice rejoinder, for Lamont, at some point who have been “Who do I have to be? Do I have to be more famous? Do I have to be a career politician like you? You act is if I have no right to be up here with nothing more than my belief that I can do a better job.”
Lieberman did his other jobs well. He made it clear that he’s a real Democrat with a record of competence and clout. I can’t tell yet whether or not that makes it a good night for him. It will all depend on how people react to the peevish and rather lordly presence I saw up there.
For my part, I was horrified. I have known this man for decades, but the haughty, disdainful personality I saw up there was new to me. He really is offended by the idea that some puny upstart is trying to take what belongs, apparently, to him. Did you catch the moment at the end when Lamont stuck his hand out? Lieberman took it like it was made out of wolverine pus, dropped it after a nanosecond and barged over to greet his old friends from 30.
