Rockwall County (TX) GOP infighting: "free speech" "McCarthy antics" |

Let the games begin! GOP seeks ouster of party member over free speech Rockwall County: Commissioner called for a probe of group
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 23, 2006 By LaKISHA LADSON / The Dallas Morning News
Rockwall County's Republican executive committee is calling for one of the party's own to resign from the Commissioners Court over a perceived affront to free speech rights.
The fuss stems from Commissioner Bruce Beaty's conflict with the No Higher Taxes Group over its signs, especially a portable message board that has been set up for months on Rockwall's main north-south road. The sign on Goliad Street (State Highway 205) has included several criticisms of Mr. Beaty, his wife, Nancy, who lost a GOP primary race for justice of the peace in the spring, and the county's failed bond proposition to build a $29 million government center.
In an e-mail last week, Mr. Beaty urged fellow commissioners to join him in seeking a state Ethics Commission investigation into whether the No Higher Taxes Group has violated Texas election law by not having required information on its political signs and filing properly with the county elections administrator.
Some fellow Republicans said they considered Mr. Beaty's call for government action against the group un-American. "I don't want anyone in the world to think that the Republican Party supports that kind of McCarthy antics from any government institution," said party Chairman Eddie Conger.http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/rockwallrowlett/stories/DN-rocbeaty_23eas.ART.North.Edition1.223bd93.html
