A volunteer for likely presidential candidate Mark Warner was murdered..
How sad!

By Lori Montgomery and Kevin Sullivan
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, July 10, 2006; Page A01

Three assailants who cut the throat of an aspiring politician from Britain killed him and tried to rape his female companion early yesterday in the driveway of a Georgetown mansion, police reported, after the couple had returned from a night at the movies.

The victim, Alan Senitt, 27, a Jewish activist and volunteer for former Virginia governor Mark R. Warner, died at the scene, police said. The woman, whom police declined to identify, was not injured.

Within hours, D.C. police arrested four people in connection with one of the most brutal crimes in years on the affluent streets of Georgetown and said they were looking for possible links to other recent attacks in the city.

Geezuz..

1. Again, cases like this make it hard not to support the death penalty

But we have to stay strong ... Hopefully these dirtbags will rot in jail for life without the possibility of parole.

9. You can be sure that the time is coming when THEY will...
do ANYTHING to stay in power.
This midterm may even be more important than the next presidential election.

5. If it is supposed to be a deterrent, the Death Penalty isn't working...
If it's simple vengence, we all lose -- as a society we need to strive to be better than that.

I know violent cases like this make it difficult to be anti-death penalty, but we need to see it as a challenge to our own humanity.

3. The story is very sad. Any murder story makes me want to puke.
But I have to ask, why did this man find it necessary to move from Britain to support Warner? He must have been independently wealthy if he was able to move to a new country in order to be a volunteer. (I am assuming that he was an "inpaid" volunteer).

Didn't Warner have enough American volunteers? Why was it necessary to import a volunteer? What did the victim know or with whom was he affiliated to make him a mark for such a heinous crime?

It really amazes me just how many people from other countries have input into our politics that is greater than WE, THE PEOPLE, who actually live here have. Sure, my sentiments sound nativist, but I just happen to believe that, well-intentioned though my neighbor might be, he has no right to tell me how to budget my income, protect my family, or raise my children.

14. Not sure about the job he was here doing, but...
..on Mark Warner's official PAC site, he just recently (July 5) put the notice out that he was accepting applications for interns in his Alexandria, VA office for positions that will begin this autumn.

What prompted the victim in this incident to come over from Britian though.. I guess we'll never know. :shrug: Maybe his girlfriend is American? I dunno.

Still.. wow- sad deal.

6. Jeez, DC seemed a lot safer under Clinton....
In late May, three couples walking on the Mall at night were robbed by three assailants in separate incidents. The robbers wore black ski masks in at least one of the cases. In all three attacks, the women were specially targeted: One was groped, one was beaten and a third was sexually assaulted.

....Word of Senitt's death traveled rapidly across the Atlantic Ocean to family members in London and friends in Jerusalem. An activist dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism and promoting Israel, Senitt served twice as the elected head of the Union of Jewish Students, which represents about 5,000 college students in Britain.

Later, Senitt worked for Greville Janner, a member of the House of Lords from Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Party who founded the Co-Existence Trust, a group that promotes Muslim-Jewish relations.

Last month, Senitt quit that job and moved to Washington to volunteer for Warner's potential presidential campaign and study political fundraising. Senitt was a Labor candidate this year for the council in the northwest London neighborhood where he was raised. He lost, but Danny Stone, a friend who took over at the Co-Existence Trust, said Senitt was committed to a life in politics.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good grief, what a tragedy. This kid was gearing up to become a expert in international politics.
10. actually the murder rate in DC is lower than it was in the 90s
The murder rate dropped significantly while Clinton was president, but it also continued to drop after he left office. I don't think who is President has a thing to do with it.
11. We'll see...they got rid of extra dough for cops and midnight basketball
that was just starting to show an impact in the last few years...and those statistics suggests that we've hit the floor and are on the way back up.
