Kyl & Graham made up story told to Supreme Court

http://www.azdem.org/article/258/jon-kyl-outed-misleading-the-supreme-court

SIGN THE PETITION: Jon Kyl Should Apologize for Misleading the Supreme Court

Jon Kyl and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina got together to write a fictional debate, including banter and interruptions from other Senators, and quietly slipped it into the Congressional Record after a debate on the treatment of Guantanamo Bay detainees. Then Kyl implied that the “debate” was live in a legal brief he filed with the Court, and the Bush administration, to prove its case, referenced the Kyl-Graham “debate” in its court filings.

Congressman and Senators often insert items into the Congressional record after debates, but what was unusual and dishonest in Kyl’s move was the lengths he went to make the debate seem like it actually happened on the floor. The reason for this is clear, he intended to mislead the Supreme Court about the intention of the law being debated.

Two weeks ago Kyl was outed by the Supreme Court for trying to mislead them.

-snip-

When asked about his deception he refused to comment. But after the pressure from the media became too much, he put forward his new excuse: “Everyone does it.”

----------------------------------

so you can lie to the Supreme Court? and apparently you can lie to the Congressional Record? and only have to apologize?

1. I complained about it when it happened
and I live in South Carolina. But even to democrats in this state Graham is the lesser of two evils (senators). So people would rather deal with the devil that sometimes plays to the other side rather than our other senator, DeMint, who is nothing but and airbag for the right.

I was outraged but I guess even democrats don't care.

2. Apologize? How about a Censure Resolution!!!
An apology consisting of "I'm sorry you made the mistake of not being able to distinguish between fact and fiction," just won't cut it.

3. I don't understand why this hasn't been given more attention
This was a HUGE, not to mention very illegal, move by Jon "Box Turtle" Kyle and Lindsay Graham. Here's John Dean's take on it:

The (Hamden) decision itself has been widely discussed. Less widely discussed, however, has been its backstory.

The Bush/Cheney Administration has been doing everything possible to keep its treatment of purported terrorist detainees out of the federal courts, particularly the Supreme Court. To assist the Administration, Republican Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jon Kyl of Arizona engaged in a blatant scam that was revealed during the briefing of Hamdan.

Senators Graham and Kyl not only misled their Senate colleagues, but also shamed their high offices by trying to deliberately mislead the U.S. Supreme Court. Their effort failed. I have not seen so blatant a ploy, or abuse of power, since Nixon's reign.
(Emphasis mine)

Read the whole thing. Dean gives the entire background, to show how criminally arrogant these two were.

5. It wasn't a lie about a blow job.
And if it was, it would still be no big deal because "everybody does it." Which is only okay if "everybody" is a Republican.

8. No.
Congressman can add in remarks that they wish to have on record, even if they never said it on the floor.
