3. Experience certainly does count a great deal.

6. Chess is a really outmoded metaphor in the age of "The Matrix"
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 12:29 AM by arendt
Aside to Pete:

Pete, I like you, but this metaphor does not work. In this,
I'm not attacking Kerry, but the metaphor. I spent twenty
years fighting the hard-AI crowd and the death throws of
Logical Positivism. I hate the totally discredited notion
that rationality is the driving force of human minds. It
just ain't so. Read Antonio Damasio or any good cognitive
scientist.

Believe me when I say its nothing personal.

</aside>

---------

When the other side can re-invent reality on command, how
can anyone say "chance is practically eliminated"? The media
is used to push peoples' IRRATIONAL buttons, not to rationally
and logically convince them.

Its all about psychological manipulation, not logic. A chess
metaphor is sooooo off-base, so lame, so 19th century
"Laplacian Dream". (ref supplied on request)

And, what, all of us peons are supposed to swoon at grandmaster
Kerry? The guy who was muttering "Dean, Dean, Dean" until
the press kneecapped Dean and decided to give Kerry the
puff coverage. Give me a break. Kerry is the momentary
recipient of the media inflation, because until they've been
built up, the media can't knock them down.

8. A philosophy major - so was my wife.
At least I don't have to explain my references.

I went from hard science (physics) into cognitive
science, and then to Buddhist explanations of
how we think.

My attitude about consciousness is that
consciousness is the Press Secretary of
who we are. It is always cleaning up and
censoring (often without our knowledge)
our internal sub-conscious dialogue.

I recommend "The User Illusion" by
Tor Norretranders. Briefly, he says consciousness
is the user illusion (like the GUI on a computer)
of our brain.

If we ever meet up, we could have a great
Monty Python Australian School of Philosophy
seminar.

Cheers,

arendt
