Framing/Spin: Push for divided government
Edited on Tue Jul-11-06 11:32 PM by LuckyTheDog
I have given up on trying to convince conservatives and conservative-leaning people to love the Democrats between now and November.

Instead, I am telling such people to vote for divided government. That's an idea that they seem to like better.

A lot of people are disgusted with Bush's massive deficits and big spending. And the idea of creating a little gridlock in Washington to slow down the rubber-stamp war spending and pork-barrel stuff appeals to them. I like to point out that we had divided government in the 90s and we managed to produce surpluses.

Now, I know that logic does not completely hold up. Divided government does not come close to entirely explaining the fiscal discipline of the Clinton era. But it makes for a good "elevator speech."

Try this approach with your GOPer friends and let me know how it works for you.

1. It's not a bad approach. Not bad at all.
Because, as you said, it's not like you can actually reason with those people.

Good thinking, indeed.

2. Hey, we can spin, too, right?
And it's not like divided government would actually NOT be better than what we have now.

4. At every revelation
of a new outrageous low by the BushCheney despotism, I keep telling myself "it can't possibly get any worse than this." I keep being wrong.
Rest assured -- the worst is yet to come.
I'm such a ray of sunshine.

3. So tell people to vote for divided government in a mid-term year.
And then go for united government two years later.

Yeah well, it's not like the Republicans don't do it either.
